Guild Hunter 15: Archangel's Resurrection by Nalini Singh
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
This story focuses mostly on Alexander and Zanaya, who have a very complex and long history together. In learning their story, we also learn more about several other Ancients, including Raphael's own parents and Titus' family. We even see the Hummingbird again, sane and happy once more. There's very little overall of Raphael or Elena in this story, but when we do see them, it is as competent and always together. Zani goes as far as to admit to not only being fascinated with Elena being unique as a mortal made angel, but also in how she and Raphael seem to fit in all ways and how much she wants that instead of the previous cycle of loving and fighting that was so familiar to her and Alexander. While there are still many questions with Neha now Sleeping, so many of the other Sleepers, this new awareness from Lijuan that Zani now possess, and all of these old alliances and family ties once more coming to the surface, it will be interesting to see how this world continues to evolve.

Pokemon: Violet
Pokemon: Violet (Nintendo Switch)

This was an unexpected Christmas gift (it was on the kid's wish list, but not my own, though I had considered trying it after hearing about a tie in with it to Pokemon Go). Not far into it yet, but have to say I've been pleasantly surprised by the number of different challenges and the game play to collect the different pokemon. A lot of early release news listed a lot of complaints about the game play and lag issues, but other than the occasional odd rendering (most often with an odd angle for a battle to start, especially near a cliff or with the little water floaters popping out for battles in the water), there haven't been many, if any, glitches to speak of in my play so far, and what I have noticed has mostly been amusing and not a blocker in any way to continuing game play. Overall, this story so far has been more enjoyable than Let's Go, Eevee, which is the only other Switch game I've really played at this point. My daughter has commented several times that she likes the style of this game watching me play it and that it looks a lot more fun to her than the battle play she's used to in Shining Pearl.

Ivan is a very interesting character and a great addition to the Psy-Changeling universe. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
There's something about a good crime drama that I just really enjoy. There are lots of interesting characters and their interactions continue to grow and change as the overall story progresses along with all of the interesting cases they go about solving. Sometimes the cases take more than one episode to solve, others span over several and circle back as part of a later connection even in another season, so the continuity is fantastic even as different characters come and go on the stage.

MCU 30: Black Panther 2 [Wakanda Forever] (2022)
My rating: 2.5 of 5 stars
Not entirely loving how they set up the sister to take over as the mantle of the Black Panther or the sudden exile faced with loyal guards. Was somewhat hesitant coming into this knowing that T'Challa is no longer part of the MCU. It did set up well for adding in Namor and the underwater civilization, but much of the story feels forced, making it difficult to really enjoy it as much as some of the earlier MCU films.

Psy-changeling 3.2: Stroke of Enticement by Nalini Singh
Zach and Annie obviously have a thing for each other right off the bat, though Annie has very obvious trust issues and Zach may be a little too careful of her emotions. In the end it takes a little mental hammering from Mercy for Zach to get the hint, though he obviously hits all the right notes with Annie's stubborn mother. That was a nice bit of surprise given her obvious prejudice towards Changelings early on in the story. This is another story in which one or both sides of the pair may need some obvious healing that their mate helps with rather significantly. Annie also makes our second human mate of the series so far.
Christmas Bree by Erin McCarthy
After all of the fuss about the house being a family heirloom, it's a tad disappointing that Bree seems to suddenly give up so easily. The story is left with a bit of an ambiguous ending however as Abby makes yet another prediction. Not sure if this is part of a series somewhere that finishes the sister's story or if this is just a one time short story.

Well that took an unexpected turn. Admittedly, Todd seemed the better candidate originally with all of his "luck" and frequent insistence. At the very least, the guy really can't take a hint. There should have been a lot more actual conversation here, but somehow, it still works with all the secrecy and the demon summoning.

The breed are an interesting twist - not entirely fitting the usual shapeshifter lore, but not entirely human either. The "mating heat" is a bit much though, especially as it hints that at some point there is no choice and it just continues to get stronger until both sides give in, and then continues even after that to grow stronger and bind them tighter together. Can't say it was my favorite of the shifter stories I've read, but it was interesting for a short story.

Rafael is not like Anita's other beaus. For one, they started out as good friends and stayed that way for a long time before any of the "benefits" came into play. Rafael is also a lot more intentional about his choices and what he wants. It was a surprising change to see Narcissus also being rational when it came to the newest threat. Not so great to see Padma back, but suppose he had to show up at some point. Somewhat still curious to see if everyone was right and Rafael was just being gaslit going into the challenge regarding his relationship with Hector or if there had been some truth to the claims. Suppose it wouldn't have really mattered though as Hector did not turn out to be a character you wanted to survive the conflict. Anita may have found another similar power though with the bruja, and now we have more doors opened to explore for both the wolves (if Richard allows) and the leopards.... maybe the lions as well, though they seem to have a much different structure than the other predators Anita's works with and is tied to so far.

Even though my kids like trucks, oddly, they haven't really been drawn into Blaze or his friend's stories. Still, it's cute how shadows are shown and described in this story, which is a good segue into shadow figures or puppets, which can be a lot of fun. As most often, these are

This one rather closely follows the TV episode with the same story, including Rubble's fright and the Paw Patrol finding out just what was causing the cabin to seem so spooky in the first place. While some people are also scared of mice, Rubble and the pups are not on that list.
Shimmer & Shine: Monster Magic
This probably is really cute if it's a TV series, however, as a story it's a little harder to follow with the genies and their wishes. Let alone how everything either seems to go wrong outright even if they hit the correct theme for the holidays, or be all sweetness. Guess that's why they're names are Shimmer and Shine if they make everything seem prettier.

Fortunately, there was still a captain at the helm, even if it wasn't the usual one. The second ship at the end though.... short of a projector hiding somewhere that isn't identified, there doesn't seem to be an explanation for the last shock to end both this story and the whole Halloween book.

This follows one of the TV series episodes rather closely when Donald ends up making friends with a skunk. As expected, that's not the best smelling friend to have around usually.... at least not until they figure out how to be friends and Daisy maybe steps in with some perfume (though one has to wonder how that would actually blend with the skunks natural scent - but it's a cartoon, so anything is possible).

Things get a bit dicey when both Vee's human friends and a couple of vampire guests both want to rent the one room available in the B & B. A lot of happy accidents and some careful maneuvering later, it's only complete coincidence and accident that allows the guests to meet without things falling apart. Without the prejudice of their different kids in the way however, they all get along swimmingly, proving that what you are maybe isn't as important as who you are.

In many ways, this is a traditional Mickey and friends type of TV series. The largest difference is that in this series, they like to race. Each of Mickey and his friend's cars have 2 forms - a traditional car form, and the transformed racer car form. Of course, the transitions aren't always the smoothest, and the cars can always break down or have malfunctions the same as any normal car or electronic. As usual though, there's some underlying story or trouble for Mickey and his friends to work through and cross the finish line.

Mostly makes sense for small readers who are also familiar with the original The Good Dinosaur movie so they have some familiarity with the characters.

This must be one of the strangest dinosaur books I've read, but the kids love it. All sorts of silly rhymes and pictures as the different types of dinosaurs add to the beat of the dinosaur dance. This is one that the kids will be sad to have outgrown, but it no longer challenges them when it comes to learning to read or grow.

My kids absolutely love all things dinosaurs, so it's no surprise that they latched onto this as one of their early readers to learn about dinosaur bones and what they meant for the different kinds of dinosaurs that lived long ago. Unfortunately, we don't have any great dinosaur museums out where we live, but someday perhaps, they'll get to see some of the really good ones and might remember some of the things they learned even back early on in this book.

Curious how these kids can be so alert during the day when they're always out fighting crime as superheroes in their special pajamas every night. This book is a bit different though as it still has the traditional storyline, but every few pages, there's a highlighted lesson included showing what the story is illustrating and how it ties in to being a hero. Definitely makes the lessons a lot easier to catch for early readers who have not yet learned how to read between the lines and apply things to other situations.

This book is a bit different though as it still has the traditional storyline, but every few pages, there's a highlighted lesson included showing what the story is illustrating and how it ties in to being a hero. Definitely makes the lessons a lot easier to catch for early readers who have not yet learned how to read between the lines and apply things to other situations.

Man-wol is not your usual protagonist. The past haunts her in a rather unique way until her usual tricks land her with Chan-sung as her new hotel manager. There's a bit of mystery and fantasy intertwined with a touch of horror and even some romance as this story unfolds. Not the happiest of endings, and yet, also seems to find a happily ever after for those you come to care about most through the series of events. I'm glad I watched this one with a friend who was familiar with the series so I was warned before the worst of the horror scenes and jump scares as I don't generally enjoy those, but the majority of the story was still enjoyable regardless of those scenes.

While firehouse tours and even demonstrations with firetrucks have been activities to arrange with schools and kids in the past, they wouldn't have a kid actually ride along on the job, and some kids may want to do just that after reading this story. Kids can latch onto some ideas pretty quick and hard if given half a chance to do so. Rex points out he's hungry and a carnivore that the story could have taken a turn for the worse. Having two kids who love all things dinosaurs, this did not escape their attention. Fortunately, a bunch of dinosaurs and a cat at a picnic aren't exactly historically accurate, so in this version, anything can happen, even T. Rex enjoying a good ol' fashioned salad.

There's not the usual theme of giving the mouse something in this version of the story, other than a bunch of eggs. If anything, this one highlights a lot of simple colors for small readers as Mouse finds all of the eggs in his search for who is hiding all of the colorful goodies. As a board book, it also lasts longer with small reader hands as the pages are less likely to tear, which matches with the simplicity of the story for the child's most likely age ranges to really enjoy this book.

Better yet, let them build something all on their own with a set of building blocks and they can dream up anything they want. Bonus points if they work together with friends or siblings to get that teamwork feel in the process.

In the process of trying to find it, he brings his friends together and helps some others who needed a does of Christmas Spirit as well. A rather simple story to highlight the intended theme of giving for the holiday season, even if it's something as deceptively simple as a little holiday spirit and cheer.

This follows the story of the newest movie fairly closely, though if you pay attention to the pictures, you'll notice Liberty already in her Paw Patrol gear following the fireworks at the beginning of the story even though she doesn't officially get any of her gear or her vehicle until towards the end of the story as the newest addition to the team. Still, for any child who follows the series, this is a simple and cute addition to the collection.

Pete really does seem to love his shoes. This book features another song with Pete and his shoes. Despite the early on statement that he's wearing 4, watching the pictures, he's clearly only wearing 2 later on. Where did the other 2 shoes disappear to? Pete doesn't give up as he walks around with Gus to help him find a way to fit in with him and his friends. Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter 27: Sucker Punch

This one was a bit easier to get into if just because I went straight into it after finishing Serpentine. While in a completely different location, this one still brings the focus in on Anita and Olaf, with Olaf throwing some surprising curveballs that make Anita and Edward both reevaluate just what it may come down to in their interactions with Olaf.... kill or be killed.... or is he actually the new weretiger for Anita's group and everyone it's a case of everyone still protesting too much? Honestly, it would be a bit disappointing at this point given how big and bad Olaf is supposed to be for him to end up as another one of Anita's Brides or a common part of her poly group learning to share everything.
When it comes to the case that brings in 3 of the 4 horsemen after all 4 were just together on the last hunt, this one doesn't really rank well on the normal scale. Still ends up rather bloody and very disappointing, especially given all of the work and effort put into saving Bobby in the first place. It would have been interesting to see what may have played out with his character had the ending been different.

The ads are annoying as usual, and the "special" puzzles only available once by ad are most often not as interesting as the standard game play. Regardless, the game itself is well designed and enjoyable. An easy way to pass the time with a challenge. You end up with 2 ways to solve each puzzle between the series of questions to answer or finishing the quote at the top.

The concept and the variety of puzzles are good, however it is more premium than freemium or free game in any sense as you'll end up required to buy membership and/or additional tokens if you truly want to play all of the puzzles. Even the daily login reward won't get you more than one puzzle if you remember to log in and activate the discount for the day, otherwise expect all of the puzzles to cost twice as much if you want to play them. The pay wall makes it very aggravating and not worth the energy to try and gain access to the puzzles desired to keep playing as it is ultimately very limited.

James Bond 27: No Time to Die

While the acting and filming is well done, this is not the most engaging of the Bond movies. Add to this the conclusion of the movie, and it seems a bit of a let down overall. Short of a reboot, it would seem this is the last James Bond film, though we do meet the new "007" as James has been working with the CIA, so there could be potential to continue to franchise along that codename if the creators wanted to. Doubtful it would have the same impact as the original series, though.

Husband chose this one for some humor after a run of mediocre movies for the night, and this one didn't seem to be much of an improvement. The acting and the filming are well done, granted, but the story itself is so random and chaotic that it's difficult to follow at times. Additionally the comedy is often disturbing at best, leading to more than a few moments of concern and questions. The underlying meaning at the very end of the film is sweet, if you can wade through the rest of the insanity to make it that far.

This is loosely tied to the MCU via the multiverse, though it's not clear unless you're paying attention to the cut scene at the end and snag the tie-in to Homecoming. As it's owned by Sony and not licensed with Marvel itself as the Spider-Man movies are, its' a loose tie at best, similar to what was used in Venom. There are several inconsistencies in the filming and the story that make this one harder to digest on a whole. It also doesn't have a very clear ending, so you're left wondering exactly what you're supposed to think about the story told and if it really is at a stopping point or just ongoing with plans for another film (unlikely considering how badly this one performed).

This has got to be one of the strangest MCU films I've seen to date. It feels like it could have had a lot of potentially, but so much was crammed into it for the sake of the storyline that it just feels haphazard and chaotic. The screaming goats and constant rainbows and flashing lights don't help with these impressions. It seems as if there will be a focus on the children possibly going forward in the movies as well, though time will tell if this holds true or is only the focus for this one film.

Fantastic Beasts 2: The Crimes of Grindelwald

I may have accidentally watched these out of order, so there were several things that made more sense after watching this. Grindelwald also changes appearance rather significantly between the first movies and the last one, which is also confusing. We see more of Dumbledore and the older Hogwarts though, which is interesting to compare to films that take place later in the story. For example: how does Dumbledore go from wearing smart three piece suits in this trilogy to wearing flowing wizard gowns in the original Harry Potter series? Not sure we'll ever get answers to some of these oddities, but they are indeed still odd and interesting to observe.

The acting is good, but the overall story is not the most engaging and is predictable. There is also no continuity when it comes to the actors from the other 101 Dalmatians or even the original character designs. For example, Anita was a designer, and now she's apparently an African American journalist? The only consistency in this regard is that she's considered a close friend to Cruella, though this seems to be more Cruella's thought to begin with and Anita doesn't particular seem to agree beyond the thought that yes, her past relationship in this case will allow her a leg up when it comes to the reporting aspect so she's seen as doing very well with her job. The movie also gives Cruella a much closer relationship with Horace and Jasper than originally seems apparent with the way she tends to abuse her lackies and hired help. On the other side, it does seem very clear how she turns out a little around the bend between her mother's original fate and dealing with the Baroness.

A bit quirky and amusing, but also has it's fill of darker moments as things certainly don't go according to plan entirely. There are at least a few happy endings, though still some ambiguity as well. Also curious if we ever learn exactly how and when Dumbledore goes from wearing 3-piece suits and close shaved bears to full length beards and long flowing robes... seems a rather dramatic change for the character, though the suits also seem to fit in better with the general population and clothes worn by the public in the film.

Hodaka is a runaway that doesn't seem to have much luck or much of an idea of how things work (really, who holds onto a gun of all things and thinks it's a lucky charm?!). Hina hasn't had much luck either as she's supporting her and her younger brother on her own, but she somehow seems to make things work. All of this is besides Hina miraculously becoming a real live "sunshine girl." Too bad there are consequences to this power that the kids have no clue about as they decide to try and capitalize on Hina's unique gifts to improve their own living situations. It's still unclear exactly why things were so bad that Hodaka decided to run away; his answers in the film seem superficial and vague. Despite this, these children learn some hard lessons and find their own family along the way.

Excellent addition to the series showing growth in multiple characters. While there are more than a few tie ins to the past, and we see more background characters that aren't always even mentioned let alone have bigger parts to the stories, the pace is consistent and engaging as Eve navigates the newest case willingly bringing more people into the picture and intentionally working with them where in earlier years she might have considered Feeney alone. The children in this chapter of the In Death story are very lucky indeed that Auntie made a mistake leading Eve and her team to turn all of their considerable resources in the Academy's direction.

Another game that is not like the ads would have you believe. It is timed rather heavily and will try to force you into buying coins to stay in a level and not lose any "bonuses" that you have earned in the game so far (which don't seem to really do anything at all). If you want something slightly different from the standard match 3 tile games, then you might enjoy this, but overall it seems to not be well thought out if you really want something to just solve puzzles and not spend money on.
