The Too-Perfect Saint: Tossed Aside by My Fiancé and Sold to Another Kingdom 5 by Fuyutsuki Koki

While there have been many short arcs in the earlier chapters as things unfolded for Philia, this volume officially enters what the author considers the "second act" of the series - when Philia begins to focus more on those around her than just herself and her own situation. This is especially clear in this volume as events unfold during the main couple's honeymoon, introducing new characters that will at least play a large role in events for this volume, if not potentially future volumes in this arc as well. Himari is the largest focus here, which is a little refreshing given her tendency to fade into the background. There even seems to be a bit more in regards to a friendship between Grace and Osvalt's older brother, which would make sense given their ties to Elizabeth, but hasn't really been too obvious as far as seeing them interact on their own away from her grave. The short stories at the end add additional flavor, coming from multiple perspectives and covering many different parts of the story in this volume. Looking forward to how more of this story unfolds.

Philia is up against the crown prince in her desire to save her sister Mia as the monster strike is imminent and they learn the barrier can only be expanded where there is enough power to anchor it, but there is no such anchor in Girtonia. Fortunately, Prince Osvalt remains on Philia's side as always and is happy to dive into battle with her. In the meantime, Mia has set the stage for Prince Julius' downfall with the aid of Prince Ferdinand, and even the king enters the stage. The king looks far younger in this rendition than expected, especially given his illness. Like Prince Osvalt's attention to Philia, Prince Ferdinand also excels at reading Mia and understanding what is at stake. Comparatively speaking, this volume still leaves us around the first light novel as Philia has yet to learn the extent of events that Mia has uncovered in their homeland.

The Too-Perfect Saint: Tossed Aside by My Fiancé and Sold to Another Kingdom 4 by Mago Ayakita

Mia has a larger focus in this volume as we see her efforts to win over Prince Ferdinand and her encounter with Philia's mentor. Philia's scenes are mostly her worrying over Mia and refining her medication, though we do finally meet the king in this volume. We also see Grace's sisters and more of their dynamics as they play off each other's strengths and weaknesses to help Philia protect everyone. The next volume is likely to have a lot of key scenes included given where this leaves off with the barrier and the situation with the troops.

The Too-Perfect Saint: Tossed Aside by My Fiancé and Sold to Another Kingdom 4 by Fuyutsuki Koki

The beginning of this book is so reminiscent of events in volume 3 that I actually thought it was the same book at first. Despite this, things quickly turn back to the wedding and spin off from there to a new adventure with a lot of history for Philia. Her new friendships prove more than a little helpful here as well as this tight timeline would never have been possible without Ezra and Mammon. We learn a lot more about Philia's parents and extended family in this volume, even giving some unexpected closure to many of those around her. Mia seems to come into her own as well, though she refuses to take credit for her own deeds and continues to praise her older sister. There are several touching scenes between Philia and Prince Osvalt as well, leading up to their big wedding. It's a fitting conclusion to the series with a lot of rather significant changes as the characters have grown, especially for Philia.

Sometimes it's hard to remember the manga is paced much slower than the novel, so while this is an adorable addition to the storyline, those that read the light novel, or even have watched the anime now, will find this volume to be well behind the other publications. The focus isn't as much Philia and her growth this time, but her sister Mia. We get far more attention to detail and additional information from Mia's point of view that it still makes for a very quick and enjoyable read. The sisters have found their own paths, and it would not do well to be the fool trying to stand in their way. We also have the cemetery scene in this volume, though it comes across as more platonic and thoughtful than in the other renditions where the hints of the prince's focus on Philia are already present. As usual, it's fascinating to see more of the character's expressions with the artwork rather than just imagining from the words.

Things are finally peaceful, and Philia is enjoying her new life, even if she is still somewhat unsure in certain aspects of her relationships as she's still unused to being seen as more open rather than always compared to her sister. Oddly, her sister and Grace seem to have a rather amusing jealous feud going on, though they mostly keep it under control at Philia's urgings. Her interactions with the her new fiancé are also very sweet, even if their relationship may be a tad rushed. It makes sense why there is more to go in the series though with the news Ezra and her partner bring back to Parnacorta. It seems a new adventure is now in front of them with yet another set of unforeseen expectations attached. Will Philia truly be able to find enough information to support her desire to reject this new expectation? It would also be unusual given the focus on the archbishops if we don't see some interaction with Parnacorta's own previous bishop in the holy land. With everyone's reactions, it seems there may be more to the story that remains uncovered at this time.

So far this seems to be following the books very closely, though there isn't a lot of material with only 2 light novels (and now 2 manga that don't finish the story from the first light novel yet), so some concerns that this will be a one season show only and end up lacking a real conclusion given the books are still ongoing. We'll have to wait and see, though so far the art is beautiful and it's enjoyable to see the story come to life in animation, even if it is a bit of a slower moving series in some respects.

Just when we think there might be a chance for peace with the barrier in place, something new comes up. It is slightly confusing how they manage to connect these new disappearances to demons and events in ancient history, as well as rather convenient how Philia and those she knows play into this new tale. It does add another dimension into this world and other powers beyond the traditional saints and monsters originally introduced in volume one. There is also significant growth in Philia's relationships and her choices for her own future, though it's been clear from the beginning she's been a much deeper character than others give her credit for due to her incredible poker face. The author's note at the end leaves it questionable how much more we'll see of this series, but sites list at least 2 more volumes for the light novel, which would be significantly more in the volume if the entire series is redone in the other medium. Hopefully the future stories won't be as high stakes, but that doesn't mean they won't have just as much emotional potential on a whole.

While this in general is the same story that the manga version is telling, there are several differences in this version. Of course, as a light novel, the story also goes much further than the one manga volume currently published does, especially as it finishes the original arc of the story in this first installment. Many questions remain with Philia's relationships and training, but the original inherent danger and the conflict in Girtonia all have conclusions, or so it seems. The conflict could be ongoing if the barriers still hold and the situation potentially changes. It would also be interesting if Philia were to learn about the secrets Mia uncovered while the sisters were separated; so much potential.

Decided to start with the manga this time around as it's usually a faster read and doesn't cover as much story as the light novel. Philia seems to have little self-awareness, and as a result, comes across as cold and aloof. In reality, she may care too deeply in some ways, as she is driven to act as the perfect saint. It seems the only one who truly cared about her back home is her little sister, who is genuinely lost by her sister's sudden disappearance. It seems the situation back in Girtonia may be taking a turn for the worst now that Philia is not around to bolster the nation, but at least it seems Parnacorta truly does value her contributions and so far no one has been put off by her stoic demeanor. Hopefully they can continue to get to know her as she may even be learning to get to know herself in the process.
