My rating: 2 of 5 stars
Rangetsou's powers seem to have gone into super mode, and Sogetsu may not be far behind given their method for finally removing his collar. Though one might wonder why go through such danger and pain to remove the collar only to want to put a new one on - hopefully one that is easier to remove going forward. We get a few cute scenes between Rengetsou and Tenyou, especially as it seems Tenyou's brothers have been helping plot how to make it seem more acceptable for the two of them to be together in the future. The tides may have turned, and most of the story seems to be winding down, but Rengetsou seems to have something new on her mind thanks to all of these new stories.

The King’s Beast 16
The King’s Beast 16 by Rei Tōma
My rating: 2 of 5 stars
Rangetsou is both determined and desperate to change fate, leading to some rather significant changes in her appearance and how her powers are functioning in battle, which were already impressive to begin with. It seems perhaps the original conclusions that fate can't be changed entirely may not be as true as thought given the reference to the change. Tenyou also managed to find the threat from the inside, though the question remains if it's too little too late. At least it seems the current emperor understands more than one aspect of Tenyou's ideals and goals to aid their people and lands. Now if they can truly turn the tides, perhaps they can earn some of the peace they wanted to begin with. Even Sogetsu seems to be serious for a change, not necessarily for himself, but for the sake of the future Rangetsou is fighting for.

The King’s Beast 15
The King’s Beast 15 by Rei Tōma

Rangetsou is getting better at interacting with Tenyou and reading him even when he refuses to say anything. Hopefully, Tenyou is correct in her determination this time around and she can bring both Boku and Tenyou's brother home safely from the war. At least Tenyou seems to be doing well when he spars with this brothers and he does still have Sogetsu at his side. The two siblings still seem to baffle those around them, but Sogetsu seems much more laid back overall, especially compared to Rangetsou's training and discipline. She's learning to relax where she can though and seems to be starting to identify the things she herself wants in the future, even if it means fighting for it along the way.

The King’s Beast 14
The King’s Beast 14 by Rei Tōma

It seems the previous emperor and Tenyou may have already had a plan in motion to secure Kyoko's cooperation, so the twins just needed to decide his fate. They may have an idea of where the trouble on the border is coming from as well, but it seems that may spell out doom for one of the princes, or maybe not given these new visions if they're shared. From the references, it seems like this may be another tie in to Dawn of the Arcana, though I haven't yet read that series. It would be interesting if reading both at the same time to see how it may fill out the story or if it seems to be completely separate. We get some sweet moments between Tenyou and Rangetsu as well as they continue to circle each other. At least it seems our inner circle of characters are in a better place for the moment, even if they are still facing challenges in this new world.

The King's Beast 13
The King's Beast 13 by Rei Tōma

Sogetsu seems to be in remarkably good humor and rather laid back with his life at this point. Rangetsu seems slightly more aware and actively asks for opinions to enhance her own appearance. She also seems to be getting along better with pretty much everyone, though doesn't seem too pleased with Tenyou's brother. The date scene at the festival is cute, though how they're going to convince Kyoko to return to the palace is a mystery. Definitely can understand why Rangetsu is struggling so much with that decision and being near each other again.

The King's Beast 12

Though it seems like the time between events is not much, we learn from Rangetsu's declaration when she rejoins Tenyou that it took two years for her to finally return to the palace. This time, not as Tenyou's beast, but as a palace guard after having passed the exam to become an official. It seems there may be more coming soon however as these two are not content to be apart now and Rangetsu quickly learns she does not care for someone else standing by her prince's side. Sogetsu also seems much more comfortable and glad to see his sister again, even if it looks like he is still trapped wearing that chain. Surprisingly, the rest of the princes and several of their beasts also appear to be glad Rangetsu has returned, a few of them even watching the exams. It would seem even with her rather unusual entrance into the court, perhaps she has found a place she does belong. Certainly seems far happier now than in the beginning of this volume when she was "free" outside the palace.

The King's Beast 11 by Rei Tōma

Rangetsu decides to head back home and see the country on her way. Unexpectedly, she's joined by Teiga along the way. At the beginning, there's a brief ray of hope, but that seems to have been dashed rather spectacularly by the time they make it back home. Considering the way both Rangetsu and Tenyou are handling their separation, can't help but wonder if Taihaku showing up means Rangetsu may soon be back at the palace with her brother and everyone else.

The King's Beast 10
The King's Beast 10 by Rei Tōma

Sogetsu himself seems to believe he has multiple personalities and can't identify which one is the real him, but it would seem, he's been himself all along, just relying on the appearance of these alternate personalities to protect himself from the pain he was forced to endure at the emperor's hand for so long. It's also interesting to learn Rangetsu is susceptible to heats, though none of the previous aphrodisiacs triggered it until now. Tenyou once again proves his own determination in protecting the twins when he steps in to help bring Sogetsu back home, which is clearly well timed given neither Rangetsu or Taihaku seem to be a match in the betting hall.

The emperor and his beast servant are formidable, but thankfully not a match when the rest of the princes and their beast servants join the fray on Tenyou and Rangetsu's side. Tenyou perhaps pays the heaviest price of them all with the loss of his arm, though this doesn't seem to be weighing him down overall. It does perhaps pose some proof and questions with Sogetsu and Rangetsu's healing abilities, as if they were able to use their power on anyone else, Tenyou would be the one that both would want to help given their positions and ties to him and his sacrifice to help the twins. It appears we are also meeting a prince from another of the authors series in relation to the metal the collar is made of around Sogetsu's neck. At least they found a way to unchain him from the inner palace, even if they can't remove the collar just yet. Sogetsu himself seems to struggle with his own personality and what to do with his freedom even as everyone seems relieved to have him back with his twin and the rest of them despite no one knowing exactly what his position will be as he can't leave the palace since entering it as a servant, but Rangetsu is also now Tenyou's beast servant.

It's a bit odd to see Rangetsu dressed like the rest of the princess' handmaidens, but it seems to serve it's purpose getting her into the palace. Rangetsu's new uniform is finished, and the design is not helping when it comes to hiding any femininity as it seems to draw it out and be a more feminine design overall. Things come to a peak on several fronts given this new information regarding Sogetsu (both his previously conceived death and now this likely conclusion that he's still alive), Rangetsu actually having an Ajin power after all (and stronger than Sogetsu's same gift), and Tenyou confesses his feelings in such a direct manner, it's impossible for even Rangetsu to misunderstand this time.

More awkwardness ensues as Rangetsu ends up having to try on an assortment of clothes for Tenyou and Taihaku as they are trying to determine his wardrobe as the prince's beast servant. Now we have more people learning Rangetsu's secret as well thanks to the third prince's plotting and this incense that can apparently only affect female Ajin. He certainly didn't think he'd become a sort of touch stone for Rangetsu once she had someone she could lean on who she didn't have to completely hide from. The King's Beast, Vol. 2 by Rei Tōma

Tenyou is clearly not anything like Rangetsu suspected. Who would think a prince would care about a beast servant to the point that they literally wear themselves out chasing them through the palace - and even up on the roof. Taihaku learning Rangetsu's secret, or at least part of it, could be trouble as well, though he doesn't seem likely to share in that knowledge just yet. The first son and his beast servant both seem to have lost their spark and resigned to the norms of society.... at least until Tenyou and Rangetsu start upsetting the balance. Maybe there's hope for some of the family at least, though it's clear none of them will take such a proactive stance as Tenyou is willing to attempt.

Clearly, she didn't anticipate finding unlikely allies or actually liking the prince she thought was responsible for her twin brother's death. Not sure what Tenyou thinks will change trying to investigate this time around - his older brother doesn't sound wrong when he points out that his inquiries are most likely to get shut down again. Hopefully they can uncover something useful before that happens.
