Golden Japanesque: A Splendid Yokohama Romance 5 by Kaho Miyasaka

It's clear to Maria that she's been left behind when Chiaki shows up in Mayazumi's place where they were to meet to elope. What he doesn't tell her though is that he is staying to save his family and still has no intention of accepting the engagement his mother has set up, even going himself to have it broken as he works with his father to dig up the problems leading to their family's current troubles. Meanwhile Chiaki is putting his own moves on Maria making it clear he's interested in her and even helping her find a place to work where she can work on her language skills. Things could have gone badly for Maria's mother as well after she is dismissed by Mayazumi's mother if her now ex-fiancé hadn't seen her on the street and pulled a few strings of his own behind the scenes. It seems he's still trying to look out for her though of course she has no idea and is trying to determine how to move on in her own way.

Mayazumi finishes his studies early and returns home to find Chiaki hitting on his fiance Maria. Maria herself still struggles with self esteem and feels she is not worthy of Mayazumi. This is further complicated when she is to be introduced at his welcome home party, and his mother instead announces his engagement to someone else entirely. Mayazumi seems to think they can elope to find their happiness and both are set on it. Though his father tells him to go, it seems he may be even more ill than anyone has been lead to believe.

Maria struggles with her confidence, but Mayazumi is so convinced of her worth he arranges for her own education with his family while he travels overseas with the promise of marriage when he returns. This seems to shock everyone significantly, but overjoys Maria who continues to fall for him. While her lessons seem to progress slowly but overall well, it seems there may be a bit of a twist in routine when Chiaki shows up at the house and is Mayazumi's cousin no less.

Maria is convinced she belongs among the servants at best, but Mayazumi doesn't give up challenging her until she relents and borrows one of his sister's dresses to accompany him to the party. Unfortunately as accepting as Mayazumi seems to be, there are others who don't like her gaining favor and set out to tear her down. By some twist of fate, Maria remembers a song in another language possibly taught to her by her father. Despite not know she's singing in another language or later on conversing in English, she does so flawlessly. If anything, this seems to reinforce Mayazumi's ideas and he comes to pick Maria up for another day out on the town.

Golden Japanesque: A Splendid Yokohama Romance 1 by Kaho Miyasaka

Maria doesn't seem to have much in the way of an education on top of looking like a foreigner even with her hair dyed black. As the dye is temporary, of course it only takes one time being caught in the rain (or falling into a river) for the dye to wash out and reveal her secret. If anything, this seems to enthrall Mayuzumi even more as he takes to calling her a little mermaid, just like the fairytale story he keeps referencing. Her mother seems to think she's stepping out of her place though, especially after finding the hair pin Mayazumi gifts to her and considering it's worth. For all that she's had what seems to be a harsh life up until now, Maria wants to change.
