So much confusion. Rave is aware of what may have happened, but not the details and is apparently in a different form and less powerful than he was before time was turned back? Kratos seems convinced that things should go as she and Faris planned, but that never seems to be how they actually work out. Do these deities never learn? History and power aside, it doesn't seem like they've ever truly controlled the humans around them. At least Jill and Hadis seem to have some measure of trust in each other, though Hadis still excels at earning Jill's ire. It seems Kratos may have managed to get the upper hand here though; just how will Rave push back against this new onslaught.

The Do-Over Damsel Conquers the Dragon Emperor 5 by Sarasa Nagase

There's not a whole lot of story progression here as Jill is still a cadet and they are still in hiding from Hadis' uncle. His siblings do seem like they care for him in their own unique ways, though they also feel like their current standing prevents them from aiding him directly, at least originally. It's interesting to see how the manga version compares to the light novel and the anime. We also meet the "Raccoon" for the first time in this volume, though we don't see much of him just yet in the story line. As usual, the manga moves much slower than the light novel does, though it is still interesting to see everything in art form rather than just in words.

Wow, there's a lot to unpack here. Somehow, Jill manages to find just the right pieces of the puzzle to turn things around. Hadis seems to at least have some idea of what she's doing even if he doesn't have all the details, but fortunately he seems to at least trust when Jill insists she's acting in his best interest. This situation with the previous emperor and Gerald is more than a little chaotic though. And just how and when did Raw suddenly grow large enough for Hadis and Jill to ride him? He's almost always with Jill, so showing up at the festival like that is more than a little surprising. It seems the next steps will depend at least some on what happens in Kratos and if they're able to find Prince Gerald.

Jill and Hadis both lose their magic and are stuck in the mountains with Zeke and Camilla. Jill isn't entirely wrong when she voices her concerns about them being found, let alone their lack of funds. It's certainly a bit different to see the art in this version of the story, so we can actually see some of the different dragons even if they aren't in color. The descriptions are still different enough and the reactions are pretty clear. Hadis is his usually bubbly self for the most part, but there's definitely something else behind the mask he doesn't let most see, except maybe Rave.

The age thing is still weird, especially with the wedding planned and Jill's physical age at this stage, even if mentally she's much older. Still, there are some entertaining antics and learnings, especially as Jill steps into the unexpected roll of teacher. Perhaps a brief scare there with Hadis reverting back to perhaps the wrong timeline rather than just a previous version as Rave had originally indicated, though thankfully that was short lived. We find more of the royal family too, though at least one seems to be trouble. These vague memories of Rave's seem troublesome as well along with this incest theme in Kratos potentially stemming clear back to Kratos and Rave themselves. While the story itself is ramping up and more engaging, some of these key background elements are questionable enough that it still loses points and has more cringe that it might otherwise.

The goddess starts making her moves, but that reveals a few more answers for Jill and sets things in motion for both Jill and Hadis to recognize their feelings more. It's a tad disorienting how Camilla keeps calling Jill "Jilly" here, though don't recall that in the light novels. Suspect it's to be cute as she's still a child, but it just seems strange, especially when almost everyone else uses her name except when Hadis was still calling her his amethyst and Rave who calls her girlie a lot (replacing "missy" from the novels). Some of the characters look rather different than mental pictures were built up as from the novel descriptions, but in some ways that makes this even more interesting. Hadis and Jill are just starting to communicate as well, so we see even more emotions and reactions. The bonus chapter for this volume includes the introduction of Hadis Bear and Sauté, both who are perhaps somewhat childish leanings but also protection and comfort sources for Jill.

The mercenaries somehow seem less organized and in fewer numbers with the manga version than the light novel implied, though this would oddly make it even more understanding that Jill's plans could work so well when she's just one little girl, especially when you factor in her own power and training. He conversations with Rave are amusing, and the emperor's antics are as entertaining as ever. It's good to finally see Camilla and Zeke as well, and Sphere stepping up as expected. Now they'll just have to survive the prince.

Admittedly, the story does flow easier in manga format for this one than the light novel, especially when it comes to visual cues, like how it seems Hadis and Rave recognize at the beginning that Jill isn't in her true form and may have actually been able to see her older soul for at least a brief moment, though it seems as if they forget this rather quickly. The short story at the end is interesting as well, though it took a minute to realize it mostly takes place during Jill's first life before shifting focus to the current reality, which would turn it into a memory. It's also hilarious to see rave especially in art form - he really does look more like a fat cartoon snake with wings.

Well, that could have very easily ended in disaster. Hopefully, Jill and Hadis are stronger for this encounter, though it is a bit strange still with their age gap and Jill's physical body clearly not aligning with her mental age (though she definitely has moments where she acts and thinks like the child she currently is this time around). It would seem there is still something else going on that no one else but Faris is aware of, which could be problematic. So much happens, though it seems to be over a relatively short span of time. Makes it even more unsure regarding the odds to carry out their happy family plans once Jill is old enough to officially marry.

Still not a favorite, but it may have potential to grow on me. Hadis remains a bit obtuse, though it's oddly part of his charm. Jill may not know as much as she thought she did as well, as it seems there was a lot more going on behind the scenes and perhaps the brothers weren't truly against each other at all. That or they're really good at hiding their priorities and playing Hadis to their own whims, which would be concerning on a different level. Fortunately, Jill at least has enough power back to make her Dragon Consort ring visible again, making it much easier to claim her place with Hadis instead of being locked away and only partially accepted by word only. Seems this may bring several new challenges along with it, only now Jill has a few other girls to get some help from in the form of Hadis' own sisters.

For a light novel, this series is taking longer than normal for me to absorb. Jill and Hadis are unusual characters, especially Hadis. It seems for every step forward there are 3 steps back. For all the Hadis' siblings seem to be decent, it is also somehow no longer surprising why the understanding was previously that everyone betrayed Hadis and he stood alone in the end. Hopefully, Jill will succeed in changing that future, though he really needs to work on some awareness and how he phrases things.

Jill's life has taken a turn for the worst in the beginning where it seems death is the only option, only she wakes up as her old 10-year-old self. She's determined not to let her fate play out the same way, but that plan probably wasn't thought out clearly enough to consider getting married to the Dragon Emperor with her former fiancé chasing after them. The lore in this world is more than a little confusing and it's a bit unnerving that these two are talking any terms of marriage when Jill is still a child in this life, even if there are clear reasons for it that finally come clear in the end. It's easy to forget sometimes that Jill is a child though as her memories are still of her old self and she definitely acts more mature most of the time, except it seems when it comes to the personal relationship aspects. Seems even though she was engaged for so long in her previous life, there wasn't really a relationship to build off of other than taking and following out orders.
