Pony Scouts 2: Really Riding!

This has been a cute series. Happened to find one we didn't have while we were at the bookstore, so of course the kids grabbed it. This one features the girl's first riding lesson and a surprise new foal. As with the other books, there's an abbreviated glossary in the back that ties in to the story and horse information that is good to know if you are working with horses in any form. Cute way to teach kids about horses, riding, and proper barn and show etiquette.

Pony Scouts 6: The New Pony

Jill is the most experienced rider of the trio, being the one who actually has grown up on a horse farm. This means that when a new palomino pony arrives, she's the one to help her mother work with the green pony. The girls don't originally understand what the term "green" means in relation to a horse's training. They learn this as well as some important bits of working with the animals. Horses don't immediately understand what you want them to do just because they're wearing tack. They have to learn, just like riders have to learn how to control horses that are trained. It's a lot of work and learning, and sometimes can be scary, but it can also be a lot of fun.

Pony Scouts 5: Runaway Ponies!

As with all these books, there's a very real lesson in the story. This time, Meg is so excited to look at the new foal that she forgets to close Sparkle's gate latch. Of course this means he gets out and promptly opens all the other gates for the rest of the ponies. Not all ponies are this smart, but it isn't unheard of (Merrylegs in Black Beauty did the same thing). The girls learn how important it is to pay attention, check the gates, and how to catch the ponies. Chasing after a horse will just make it run away from you. It can sometimes take a lot of patience just to catch one depending on how flighty they are at the time.

Pony Scouts 3: At the Show

This story continues the Pony Scout's adventures. Jill is entered in a horse show and hopes to win first prize. She takes second, which is still great, out of her 6-rider class. There is a brief summary at the start of all the following books after Pony Crazy explaining who the Pony Scouts are before they move on to the actual story. While it doesn't show all the details of a horse show, it does show the very real prep time, nerves, and some of the things watched for in performance and scoring. A cute real world look at the horse show world for a child's comprehension level.

Pony Scouts 1: Pony Crazy

My kids love horses and my daughter is in that learning-to-read stage, so of course when she saw a 4 book collection of these Pony Scouts, she was sold. The books actually do teach real lessons about horses in their short stories, including summaries of items used in the book at the very back. An added learning tool with a cute story included. Of course, now she wants all the books, and I find out there's actually 10 total. I think we'll be checking out the library this summer. This one appears to be the first of the series, when "pony crazy" Meg moves out to the country and meets her fellow Pony Scouts. Cute idea and definitely something my kids relate to as they love pony toys and pictures as well as actually going riding with me.
