How Do Dinosaurs Learn to Read?

How Do Dinosaurs Learn to Read? by Jane Yolen

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This is extremely short, even for this series. Still, it gets the message across with the usual examples of how a dinosaur should or shouldn't accomplish a certain task. In this case, the examples are in regards to reading and how to care for your books. A good one especially for smaller children as it's easy for young minds to forget and maybe not take such great care of their books, especially if they get easily frustrated while still learning how to read.

How Do Dinosaurs Love Their Dogs?

How Do Dinosaurs Love Their Dogs? by Jane Yolen

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

As a home with both cats and dogs, this was a cute addition to go along with How Do Dinosaurs Love Their Cats? with a similar structure to teaching the good and the bad for children to interact with their animals. They may still struggle with some of the finer points to play time and training, especially when it comes to dogs, but it still gives a fairly good foundation to proper care fore the furry members of the family.

This is a simple yet fun board book illustrating how a dinosaur takes care of their pet cat, starting off with what they should not do, and ending with what they should. It has very obvious and direct parallels that can be applied to children and what are good pet behaviors in their own homes - though may want to leave some of the care chores to the older children to avoid some unwanted messes along the way.

How Do Dinosaurs Eat Their Food?

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is another one that my kids got as part of a set from a school book order. They love dinosaurs, so this seemed like an easy reader that they would both enjoy. So far, we've been right. This book focuses on table manners and the importance of eating the food given, including what's good for you. As with others in the series, it starts off rather jokingly asking if dinosaurs do a host of different things that would be considered rude or generally bad manners. About halfway through it turns around and shows what hey actually should do as far as being grateful and using good manners instead. Makes a very easy and quick reference for "good dinosaur" vs "bad dinosaur" which has the kids doing their own self assessments to be "good dinosaurs" themselves. Have to approve of that!

How Do Dinosaurs Say Merry Christmas?

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This is a large print short story revolving around dinosaurs and Christmas. It is part of a "How Do Dinosaurs" set that we bought our kids for last month's school book club as they love dinosaurs. My son especially is obsessed with them lately, so this set has been an instant hit. The books are paperback large print, so no as sturdy as board books for small children. The story itself is very simple and keeps to short descriptive sentences for each page spread describing what a dinosaur could do, starting with all the things wrong, and ending with the things a "good dinosaur" will do. My husband has adapted it to asking "is that what a good dinosaur would do?" when the kids are doing something they shouldn't that is covered in this series. They actually will think about it and respond accordingly though, so it's been an effective reinforcement for teaching good behavior.
