This continues to be a rather tense tale as the story unfolds. Violet is finding her own happiness and security, though she admits to be lonely from time to time and does think of Winter, regardless of if she wishes not to. Winter, on the other hand, doesn't seem to have thought of much else than what Violet went through and has yet to fully grasp what she wants, though he has a far better understanding for her previous state of mind and suffering. He's still trying to set up his perceived version of the perfect world for Violet without actually asking her what she wants, which seems to be a rather big crux to their frequent misunderstandings. On the other hand, Winter is beginning to feel the same lonely pain that she felt previously, to the point that he is now the one initiating their most recent switch, not that he'll admit to it. While he may be trying to save face, it seems like coming clean would be the better choice here, especially as it seems likely to happen more often as he continues to spiral and seems convinced the best choice is to remove himself from the equation.

This is such an emotional volume and disappointing at the end. Winter finally knows what causes the body switching, but just in time to start to understand just how badly Violet feels like she needs to leave. Both of them seem to still labor under serious misconceptions when it comes to money - Winter that it will fix everything, and Violet that it is all Winter loves. Sadly, this may be a case of too little too late. It looks like Violet's gifts and the physician's letter will all arrive after this final stage has set, and who knows what condition Winter will be in at that time. There is another volume in the book still, so there may be some hope yet, but it's painful to see just how badly they are each struggling.

The more Winter learns, the more he seems to realize he may not know Violet as well as he thought. He's made several realizations and opened up a lot in since the beginning of the story. Violet also wants to get to know Winter better, especially when she realizes how little they know about each other. With both of them uncertain but trying to mend fences, returning to Winter's childhood home threatens to set their progress back. Violet is still the only one who knows how to trigger the body swap, though understandably is more hesitant now that there is a glimmer of hope for the future. Meanwhile, Winter still only sees it as a useful ability they can use at will. If their latest plan to intentionally swap positions does indeed work, it will be interesting to see what realizations come of the experience. Given Winter's anger when he discovers slights and damage done to Violet that he was unaware of, it's doubtful he'll be too happy if or when he discovers how they're switching places. While it makes sense that Violet would want to keep the secret, it also seems to be a rather dangerous one.

This is an interesting twist with the foundational story of a husband and wife who truly do not understand each other and can't seem to communicate at all. They both make assumptions, but the assumptions make sense to them in the context of their own lives. When Violet can no longer take the pain of this life, she tries to end it, only to wake up in her husband's body. By pure chance, she does manage to discover the trigger for switching, and they quickly learn how to switch back. These small glimpses into each other's lives are enough for Winter to start wondering if all he knew was really correct, while Violet becomes more confused and determined to go their separate ways to try and prevent further pain. It seems like maybe Winter cares a good deal more than Violet knows at this stage, and is practical enough to even see some usefulness in this new strange ability, though given his reaction when he realizes she is injured or needs help, it is unlikely he will be as pleased if he learns the reason for the swapping in the first place.
