I will admit, despite Legolas and Tauriel being additions that weren't in the book, I'm glad they were added. Seeing Legolas in action brings a little bit of thrill and a nice tie in besides Gandalf to the original LotR series. Bilbo just wasn't in the original movies enough to really consider him a tie-in, especially with the vast differences between young Bilbo and his elderly self. There were a couple of humorous reference drops about future characters (like Gimli), that added a little extra thrill as well. There was some annoyance over Bard appearing very much like Aragorn (who I applaud for refusing to be in this film given the vast character age difference if he were to show). Overall it dragged a bit as it was largely running from one danger to another. The cut off point is a huge hanger that draws you straight to the third and final film.

Having never finished the book completely, I couldn't vouch for how accurate it is in this regard, though my father-in-law said that other than adding a few small things it was spot on. Apparently there are some parts that you read about in the later books that take place during The Hobbit, readers just don't know it until further down the line. These bits have been incorporated into the film to fit the correct sequence of events. I have, however, seen the animated version of the film as it is a childhood favorite of my husband's and a friend of mine in college. Definitely prefer this film, and really like how they kept things consistent with the already released Lord of the Rings films. The music is beautiful and the scenery is stunning. There are slight differences in some scenes, like the slow motion effects when Bilbo uses the ring, that make it apparent some things we know are coming have not yet taken effect (the wraiths tracking the ring and Dark Lord not yet following it either, so none of the wraith screeching or encroaching blackness when in use). Subtle differences, but very fitting and tell a story of their own if you pay attention to them. Definitely a great addition to an already amazing series. Too bad we have to wait so long for the next installment.

Done in an older animation style, this was one of my husband's favorites growing up. I can see why between his love of the series and the catchy tunes, which would likely grab any child's attention at least for a while. Overall not my favorite, but still interesting to watch. Looking forward to the live adaptation that is currently being filmed.

The last of the series, this movie is both exceptionally well done and also way too long. There was a running joke when it came out in theaters that it had a few too many endings in the film, which in some cases is true. There are probably at least six different points where the film could have ended. Rather than taking those options though, the story sees to a conclusion for each individual main character and home that's been visited throughout the adventure. Aragorn finally steps up to the plate and manages to pull a rather creepy and highly useful army into the foray with him, which helps tremendously in the war effort. Thankfully the hobbits manage to pull through with their tasks or the story would be for naught.

A seamless continuation from the first film, Gandalf's return is a welcome surprise in this sequel. This film really brings out a lot of details with Golum as he land the position of Frodo and Sam's guide to the black gates of Mordor. The Ents are another interesting addition as they debate if Merry and Pippin are "tiny orcs." For some reason the line that they managed to "lose" the Ent wives always strikes me as highly amusing and somewhat unbelievable. How could you "lose" an entire race's only female population? Of course the introduction of Rohan has it's own interests for me being horse masters and my own fascination with horses.

The second variation of this film done, the original had to be cut for the theater resulting in both the theatrical release and the "special edition" release that takes a full two discs just for the movie itself. Incredibly detailed and highly engaging, it's hard not to be drawn into this story when it's on the screen. Aragorn especially quickly draws the eye and interest as he doesn't really seem to fit any of the status quo set by the different races in the film. A good start to a very engaging trilogy.
