What's Wrong, Little Pookie?
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Cute little series, if not really having a point. Little Pookie is upset about something, as the title suggests. His mother goes through a serious of reasonable, and then outright made up, ideas for why he might be upset. In the end, he doesn't remember why he was upset at all, which I guess goes to prove how little purpose can be behind a child's tantrum in the first place. Cute art, rhyming story, and somewhat odd imagination (green elephants with blue wings? Sure).

Belly Button Book

Not my favorite Boynton book, but still cute. The kids like poking their belly buttons and have very ticklish tummies, so it seemed a natural conclusion to put this on the book wish-list. We finally got it thanks to my daughter's school book fair. My son hasn't put it down yet, so I guess that's a good sign, even if he can't actually read it without help yet. Cute pictures and a silly story that doesn't always rhyme are what you'll find. I'd say "sturdy board book," but my son as proven that doesn't actually exist in his reality.

Horns to Toes
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Think of "head, shoulders, knees and toes" only with additional concepts (back, teeth, numbers of fingers and toes, etc). While short and to the point, as most children's board books are, this is a fun way to help teach your child to recognize different parts of the body on different body types as they are similar enough to human but not entirely (fuzzy tummies and tails for example). Right now, my toddler is more interested in animals, but she's slowly turning to body exploration and it's easy to see this becoming a hit with that phase.

Your Personal Penguin

Not my favorite of the Boynton books, but still cute. For whatever reason, this one features a penguin that wants to belong to a hippopotamus, thus the entire book repeats the phrase "I want to be your personal penguin" with occasional reasons why this should be allowed. Not practical or overly engaging, but cute none-the-less. We got the book originally because of Mercy's attachment to her stuffed penguin from her uncle. It took a little bit for her to warm up to this book, but she now happily recognizes the penguins on the page as she hugs her own stuffed sleep buddy.

Pajama Time!
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Another cute story time book. This one is all about different types of pajamas and the parties you can have in them before setting down to bed. The only downside of the book has been that the center piece to the crescent moon cutout makes for an easily bendable and peel-able to for our toddler. Aside from that, I've lost count of the number of times she's brought it to us for reading in the last couple of days. Think that indicates another hit for Boynton.

A To Z

I have to admit, I kind of prefer this version to Dr. Seuss's ABC book. While both are silly and obviously meant for small children, it seems that Boynton did a better job of keeping it entertaining and to the point. I do also like that it does include real animals (elephants, frogs, etc) doing real things (eating, frowning, kissing, etc) rather than only made up creatures with made up habits or objects. There is also the bonus that we have this in board book format where the other one has normal paper pages. Obviously that makes this one more resilient for our toddler to play with on her own aside from actual reading time. Overall, it's a fun and cute collection to Boynton's board books.

Snuggle Puppy!

Boynton brings out yet another cute children's book. This time it's a mother dog talking to her little "puppy." Essentially it's a valentines song meant to be silly and sweet at the same time, which it definitely accomplishes. As my daughter also likes dogs and finds their noises highly entertaining, the song probably got bonus points from her in that department. It basically just repeats the chorus twice with different pictures and directions for how you read it (whisper or loud) to get the message across. Simple, but perfect for small children.

Tickle Time!
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Though I had never done the "gitchy-gitchy-goo" during real tickle time before, we merged tickle time with reading the book the first time through and it became an instant hit. Small wonder she wouldn't put it down the rest of the night and made a bee line for it again the next morning. Boynton once again puts together a series of cute rhymes to tell a story with funny characters in a sturdy little book suitable for any child. These books always seem to be fun hits with the little ones.

Opposites

Boynton's board books are family favorites that are a lot of fun and often feature cute rhymes or stories to capture the child's attention. This specific one features differences between the characters or what they have (big/small, tall/short, high/low, etc). Aptly names "opposites" as each page is a different set of opposites pictured, this is a cute book for both learning and fun while still being safe for young children being a board book instead of just easily tearing paper.

Moo, Baa, La La La!
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Another fun children's book. This one features the traditional cute art that is common in Boynton's books, along with the accompanying sounds of each individual animal. Being animal people ourselves and already teaching Mercy about many different ones (our cats along with our friend's dogs, horses and chickens mostly), this is a fun book that she always ends up giggling with and grabbing for. Hopefully she'll continue to enjoy this one as she grows and learns to read on her own.

Happy Birthday, Little Pookie
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Little Pookie can't sleep because it's his birthday. In true parent fashion, his folks are up and celebrating despite literally looking ready to drop on their feet. Of course Little Pookie is still thrilled despite it all and has a cute Birthday story to share. This one rhymes better than Let's Dance, Little Pookie, which will likely make it more of a hit as Mercy starts understanding what we're reading to her.

Let's Dance, Little Pookie
My rating: 2 of 5 stars
Another cute Little Pookie story. I can see Mercy enjoying this as she likes to boogie. However, this one doesn't rhyme and flow as well as many of Boynton's other stories. Still, it is a cute idea and will be a familiar character as Little Pookie has several books rather than just one like most of her character's. Hopefully this one will be just as enjoyable as she grows.

Little Pookie

Part of a series by Sandra Boynton, I couldn't resist picking this up at a local baby consignment sale. Mercy loves some of her other mainstream baby board books. This has the same simplicity and cute art while also telling a cute, rhyming story that will keep a child's attention as they learn to read and grow with their books. This one is good as it shows the actions and things it describes, so it will be a very good book to help teach her the meaning of different words and actions.

But Not The Hippopotamus
My rating: 2 of 5 stars
Mercy likes Doggies better, but this is another cute children's book. Easy to read and get the feel for as the small phrases rhyme while telling the story. This one leaves something to be desired at the end however as the hippopotamus finally joins the group and we find an armadillo in it's place. So... will there another book in the series called But Not The Armadillo?...

Doggies
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I think I'm going to end up reading more children's board books than anything else this year. My daughter is still too young to really understand what I'm reading to her, but she loves turning the pages, looking at the pictures, and probably just hearing me read to her most of all. She played with this book for hours after we read it. Between the different pictures, the growing number of dogs for the counting, and the different types of sounds they make, I can easily see her loving this book as she grows. My husband's love of dogs likely doesn't hurt either. It would be very easy to picture them curled up on the couch giggling to the dog barks through this little gem.
