Cursed in Love (2020)

This is the same story as the manga series Something's Wrong With Us, except there are a few changes especially towards the end, and done in live action instead of the usual anime that is more common with manga adaptations. Most notably are the changes in who the murderer is and how Tsubaki gets his surgery done, along with his mother's fate and their relationship at the end of the series. Otherwise the key points in their relationship and their sweets as both sides shift and change remain the same. The acting is well done as well, so the story really does come to life with just the right touch to make it real and stay true to the original characters.

Nao doesn't discover why they are truly facing off at the tea ceremony festival with their wagashi until Ayako is throwing a fit at her daughter's ceremony and Nao goes into labor. Fortunately, it seems the old butler wasn't as obedient as Ayako thought and Kyoko was on a mission to find the truth about her inheritance, which conveniently also worked in Tsubaki and Nao's favor when it comes to the Kogetsuan land. It's a really good thing that they've been wanting to be on good terms with Kyoko ever since the truth came out earlier in the series as well given how instrumental she ends up in all of the action here. Despite all of the drama though, they really do all seem like a very happy family.

Just when it looked like everything was peaceful and the worst thing they had to worry about was Nao's penchant to focus on work and forget herself while they wait for the time their baby arrives, Kyoko's step-mother makes her grand appearance. If we thought Kyoko was demanding before, she's downright demure now while her step-mother takes things to a new level. It also sounded like Kyoko was an only child previously, but it turns out she has a half-sister as well that just happens to be Nao's friend and customer from her second store. It's probably good that everyone is putting their foot down about closing the second store and focusing just on Kogetsuan and their family. That might not help much with this new face off though with mother and daughter both demanding the best from the each of the confectioners.

Tsubaki and Nao are trying to go away to Kyoto for a late honeymoon when deliveries for the Kogetsuan lead to them discovering a series of attacks with various clues left behind. Tsubaki just happens to catch his mother's scent and Shiori realizes that her ceremonial dagger from her sisters is missing, but this all would have still been too late had Takigawa not stepped in before Kyoko could carry out her attack. Not that this stops her from preventing at least some injury, then nearly adding more injury on top of the revelations they discover in this confrontation when she's nearly hit by a train, and then we're meant to think Tsubaki may be hit in her place when he saves her. Truthfully though, it's Takigawa's mother that they find was the original murderer, putting to rest Tsubaki's fears of being the one who killed his father, as well as the thought initially identifying Takigawa as the killer given his close resemblance to his mother, especially with the hoodie pulled up and covering their faces, so all of the living players are safe (current plots or back stabbing aside). With the past finally clear, Tsubaki and Nao nearly part ways again, but Nao is finally willing to admit that's not what she really wants after all.

It's seems Tsubaki is saving the day wanting to work with Nao in the Kogetsuan. Between the burn injuries and her desperation over the ceremony, it's a miracle Nao doesn't spiral as badly as she did leading to the face off for grandfather. Meanwhile tensions are still high on the personal front, especially with Shiori's sister, Yukari, now in the picture who seems fixated on Takigawa. Meanwhile Takigawa has professed his love for Nao, while it's still clear Nao and Tsubaki each have feelings for each other still. That's a fine mess of relationships and who should or shouldn't be with whom to sort out. Yukari may be an even bigger threat than Kyoko as Kyoko came from the shadows and attempted sabotage. With the exception of perhaps the initial attack leading to Tsubaki's injuries with the broken pottery when they claimed to be husband and wife, there was very little direct confrontation or danger where Yukari has gone straight for physical harm that could be deadly.

Even with Tsubaki's mother tearing up the test results proving her heritage, he still recognizes her skill and identifies her as the true heir to the family by blood. Now he has to decide who his name heir will be, the granddaughter he has searched for that truly shares his bloodline, or the grandson who is not blood of his son but has grown up in the home and with their traditions. Family history has claimed that it must always follow the bloodline, and this is what he has claimed up until he is now faced with this choice. Instead, he's put the two up against each other. While it seems like memories may sway the results in his grandson's favor, he doesn't make the call, but leaves it up to Tsubaki's mother instead. A cleaver ploy to attempt to make her accept the results, especially as she definitely seems to favor the more extravagant, so it's questionable if she will recognize who truly made which wagashi.

While they might be along the same line based on their shared history, they seem to keep missing the mark assuming they will only continue to hurt each other or that the other is happy now without them. Nao seems to believe that Shiori is indeed pregnant and now marrying Tsubaki for real after having thwarted their original wedding at the beginning of the series. Meanwhile Nao has her proof and is out to talk to grandpa, but Tsubaki's mother is determined to put an end to that. Did she manage to set something up to frame her for grandpa's death or will this have a different ending now that she's dared to set foot back into the Kogetsuan and the main house.

Well that escalated quickly. Tsubaki now knows Nao and Sakura are the same person, though he never did get to know she was pregnant before she apparently miscarries during the fire. His mother may have finally gotten her wish with Nao disappearing, and coincidentally his ex-fiancé Shiori is now back in the picture. Nao seems to be making her move to attempt some form of freedom however now that Tsubaki has no idea where is, indicating she's out to take end Kogetsuan, or at least as it currently stands.

Having confirmed her pregnancy, Nao struggles to tell Tsubaki while also planning how she'll disappear from his life going forward. Meanwhile she's stepped in to help further with orders and grandpa may now also be getting an inkling of who she is. It makes more sense why grandpa was so interested in Sakura now having found the hidden records in old room she used to live in with her mother 15 years ago. We even get another story in the end from their childhood when Nao's mother was still alive and working at the shop. This is a happier memory when the two share a watermelon candy together after Sakura confides in Tsubaki that she doesn't actually like watermelon directly.

At the same time Tsubaki seems to be developing feelings for Nao, leading her to wanting to tell him the truth so they can have a true relationship, except he's not so willing to accept Sakura back into his life. Short of a ceremony and these secrets dancing around each other, they call each other husband and wife and are very much living together at this point. Especially after grandfather calling them out on sleeping separately, though it seems while that might physically be safer for Nao when it comes to plotting around the estate, it won't protect either her body or her heart from her new husband.

In a strange twist of fate, she meets her childhood crush and they agree to marry each other, though neither one actually wants a relationship, at least to start with. Tsubaki doesn't recognize Nao as the Sakura of their childhood, but it's clear he is not the same kind trusting child she remembers prior to blaming her mother for his father's murder. Talk about a twisted family history and relationship. Supposedly at the core, they both just want to make wagashi (traditional handmade Japanese confections).

Seems like one step forward and three steps back. At least Claude no longer wants Athy dead, but his memories haven't resurfaced either and now it seems it may be far more serious than just amnesia and migraines. Then there's this other stranger they keep running into that reminds them of Claude and seems to have it out for Athy and Claude while encouraging Jeanette. Seems his Jeanette's true father, though no one is telling her or anyone else that, so she still is convinced Claude is her father and Athy her half-sister to complete the family she longs for. So how does that all work when Claude wants Jeanette around to relieve the pain from the migraines but can't stand being around Athy. Yet Athy is the acknowledges princess who resides at the palace and has now returned home and just wants her Daddy back, even if she keeps trying to remind herself the original goal was just to survive. Hopefully Lucas can help unravel things before they get even worse. As much as Claude definitely has always had a temper, he was also far more personable when he actually cared.

Perhaps some anger management issues aside, it turns out Claude is a decent father, or at least does care about Athanasia and attempts to make her happy. He certainly has no inkling or thought to consider the reality of having any other children, even when the Duke tries to hint at it during the debutant ball. Jeanette seems to think she's his daughter, but that he doesn't know, yet she still seems to want to be friends with Athanasia... or is it misguidedly thinking she's getting to know her own sister? Athy on the other hand seems to prefer her solitude with her father over these parties with the other debutants, though the emperor only seems to allow it in favor of her going outside the palace walls. If anything, he's shown a surprising protective side with her given the discussion of the protective spells in place and the incident on the lake (again). Lucas is also oddly very hostile towards the Duke's son, especially for someone who basically kept throwing Athy at him at his own whim before yanking her back to the palace again. Fortunately, Ezekiel seems to be kind and drawn to Princess Athanasia; yet another piece that is clearly different from what she remembers of the original book she is now living.

This is another story where the heroine is pulled out of their previous life and into a story of some type that is familiar to them prior to their sleep or death or whatever the trigger is that swaps their life before to a life in this new world. We don't know the main characters name prior to waking up in this story world, only that was she was an orphan living on her own and had recently read a story The Lovely Princess that it appears she is now living. Waking up as baby Princess Athanasia, her sole goal is survival given the character sharing her new name died in the previous book she had read. Whether it is due to knowing some of the story originally or her own determination to change her fate, nothing seems to go exactly as the story portrayed, starting with running into her father at the young age of 5 for the first time instead of at the age of 9. Unlike in the book, while Claude is indeed still seemingly cold, he takes an odd interest in Athy and seems keen on having her around from then on. Now she just has to figure out how to navigate this new world with her father involved and not make him angry as she's still terrified of his rage given the stories of his past.

Briddy is still rather naive when it comes to her relationship with Amon, but she has at least some clearer ideas since the engagement. If nothing else, Amon has been a lot more obvious in his intentions, leading to him being called a perverted beast more often than not. These dreams (or possible memories?) are an interesting turn of events, especially when we see how similar these past beings resemble Briddy and Amon in their current forms. While Briddy is naive when it comes to romance, it seems she's right on the nose when it comes to her sister's intentions and what the actions at the ball might really mean. Leaving it off on a cliff hanger at the end of this one, especially with Amon searching out the Elder who was last seen just after the ball. Could be storm clouds brewing instead of the peace most of them had hoped for.

The focus seems to be shifting from Masaki over to Yuuki as things settle down with family affairs and Yuuki and Matsu start to really figure out their own relationship. We see a bit more of Michiru and her father, though they seem to only really pop up when picking up the kids after work or for group dinners. Masaki and Hiromi seem to have become the staple for what their friends see as their ideal relationship and acceptance to strive for, which is somewhat of an interest turn considering Masaki's own insecurities through most of the series. If anything, they do seem more comfortable in their own skin and with the lives they've chosen and made for themselves.

Things are certainly going better with the in-laws, though they face a few rough patches when the new neighbor realizes most of the rest of their family and friends are actually alphas, not omegas like them and like Masaki. Of course there's Yuuki who is a beta and might actually be the real reason the new family even gives them another chance.... well, that and Hikari really is very sweet. Yuuki and Matsu are getting some heat for their relationship now as well, though they continue to insist that they are only friends even as they spend more time together and gravitate to each other pretty consistently.

Overall this is still a mostly sweet series, but seems to rehash the same issues with acceptance, especially around Masaki being an Omega given his family were not also Omegas and as he chose to marry an Alpha (outside his own gender). With the help of the system, Penelope is doing more and more magic, and now at least Winter and the crown prince have realized she has some magical ability, though they don't know about the game system of course. So far, it seems all of the love interests remain on Penelope's side, although it now sounds like Winter has had at least one encounter with Ivonne so far. Now it looks like Ivonne may be this "goddess" the three are unexpectedly up against when trying to save Laon and the children. Penelope may be the only one who recognizes her at the time thanks to having played Ivonne's stories in the game previously, but this is certainly not the setting that was portrayed previously in the game either.

It's hard to imagine that he's actually that upset with Penelope though given how adamant he remains in keeping a relationship with her, the gifts he gives her, and the way that every one of these actions in the past has raised his affection meter. At least so far, she's still surviving and there are at least a few things that have been looking up.

Add to it, it seems the assassins were actually other nobles, leading to further assumptions and power plays that her own brothers won't even hear her out for the truth. Of course this will hurt her affection ratings as well, but the saving grace might just be the crown prince, assuming he recovers from the poison in time and the other nobles don't get their way first.

It seems Penelope before our current heroine from another world took over was often the center of attention, and really not in a good way. While the current Penelope is doing her best to mostly avoid notice outside of raising interest points to hopefully obtain her own survival, she ends up being the center of the attention more often than she may like. Even the crossbow that seemed to be so cursed before and is not looked kindly on by the other nobles at the start literally ends up saving the day with these side quests. Despite still thinking Eckles is her safest route, it seems that route might also still have the largest challenge with Eckles' slave status. Meanwhile, without even trying, it seems her points with the other interests keep rising as well. Perhaps slightly confusing, but also most likely overall better for her general safety and the likelihood of her survival, especially as time is winding down to when Ivonne is supposed to make her grand entrance.

Penelope Eckhart is the villainess of a popular game, who's story happens to closely shadow the tormented history of the girl who fell asleep playing the game after activating "hard mode" to try and unlock a special ending and repeatedly dying. With a family that scorns her and ignores or derides her existence when it suits them, it's no wonder she lashes out and is seen as the villain or the "mad dog" as some of the other nobles whisper about at the second prince's celebration. Now, she must relive her family struggles, only this time she is Penelope Eckhart and has to figure out how to navigate the game to survive, except there doesn't seem to be any revive button to save her. The story certainly does look a lot different from Penelope's eyes than it did from that of Ivonne's in normal mode.

This was an unusual and yet good installment to the series. Time has passed far more than perhaps expected given how fast paced everything has seemed. Zoe and Elena's sisters aren't so young anymore, and in the cases of both Beth and Amy, even have families of their own. Elena's world seems to be coming to an end from both directions as the Mantle falls around the Refuge and her father suffers from a major heart attack. For once Jeffrey is not the same man we have come to expect however, and we get an even clearer picture of who he was before the attack that changed their lives and tore their family in half. The search resulting in Marduk's awakening is another kind of interesting and unexpected, along with his ties to Rafael and the Legion. The Cadre is literally up against the clock to find the answer to save their world before it will mean the end for all of them and resetting everything.
With the peaceful ending to this story, it could be seen as the end of the series, but it also left open enough that there could be more, hopefully with just a different twist than the constant emergencies they've been living so far. While there does not seem to be any planned continuation at this point, can't help but hope this isn't the last we've seen of these characters or the others they've alluded to.

This seems to be when we really start putting together the pieces of Maomao's own family history while at the same time, she's seeing the pieces of the mysteries around the palace coming together. There's only a hint of when she dolls up Renshi this time around, and seems to be a bit more over exaggerated on the looking tired and not perfect with the makeup this time around where in the other version there was a bit of something still cute in the final appearances. In some ways Maomao almost seems more involved in this version as she's asking questions and not as aloof as she comes across in the anime for example. Still good lead up into the next piece of the story.

I recently found the first 2 episodes of the anime of this series and was hoping the manga might give me a better idea with more character depth and story details to see if it was something I wanted to try and keep up with the releases or not. Hirumi and Masaki are still sweet together, but it seems like Masaki has a bit of a troubled past mostly due to issues with his secondary gender as an omega. Hirumi on the other hand is very protective of his family, especially of Masaki, following his treatment back in their old hometown where they met and at the hands of his own father. It's rather tense when Jiji shows up at their new house, but Hikari sets things straight in about the most adorable way possible for a child. If anything, the two seem to be moving rather quickly with Hinata's addition to the family, though there must be a fairly significant time gap in the chapters given what little is shown of the sequence of events and when the announcement is made.

This looks to have the makings of a low key family drama with an ABO setting. Hirumi and Masaki seem like a very caring couple with their little boy Hikari. This is only 2 episodes in though, so it could get better or worse depending on the story. Hard to tell entirely, but it has potential.

Mito finds an unexpected home with Ruka when asked to become his thrall. Ruka needs a thrall and blood source as a vampire and seems to have run out of options, so is instructed by his butler, friend, and seeming guide? to love Mito in order to make his love stronger. Due to Ruka's own oddities, he is considered unable to drink female blood, so they think Mito fits the bill perfectly, especially with how desperate they are to be loved and needed having been unwanted by their extended family and left out on the street after their parent's deaths. Only thing is, no one but Mito realizes he is actually a she. This Ren character seems to potentially either be problematic or another victim under Mito's unwitting spell as everyone seems to be making fast friends with her, regardless of if they like or fear Ruka.

Over the Hedge
Over the Hedge (2006)
My rating: 2 of 5 stars
This was okay, but not a favorite or something that is going to hit the top of the list to rewatch. The critters are an odd mismatched bunch that are both smart and also very gullible at the same time. Add in a couple of humans set out to eliminate them and a rather angry bear and you get a recipe for chaos. Of course there are a few good lessons tossed in as well, but you may need to point them out if you want kids to get it and not focus on the cute and chaos in the rest of the story.

Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas (2003)

Maybe it's a remnant of the Sinbad ride from Tokyo DisneySea, but I couldn't get Sinbad out of my head and realized I hadn't added this to the media list yet, though I know I have certainly watched this one before. This one is DreamWorks' take on the legendary pirate as he faces the goddess Eris to clear his own name and determine just what sort of man he is - the thief and liar everyone says, or the friend who won't abandon his old pal as Prince Proteus believes. Of course it's not a Sinbad movie without a little love interest thrown into the mix, so we have Marina who longs for the sea but is promised to Proteus and works as a diplomat for his father.

The Bad Guys
The Bad Guys (2022)
My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars
Not my favorite, but still a well done and cute show about redemption and the "bad guys" becoming the "good guys". The artwork style is mostly similar here, but with a bit of a comic edge with the lining and some of the freeze frame styles. It's easy to see why this might be a good fall back film for something lighter but still with a good underlying message that is overall enjoyable for the whole family. If you pay attention, there are a lot of references to common children fairytales as well, including the 3 pigs (and pretty much anything where the wolf is the "bad guy" traditional speaking, which is where a lot of the stereotype references come from).

First Flight
First Flight (2006)

This is a super short story about a tiny fledgling who unexpectedly changes everything for a rather fastidious businessman. There is very little sound as far as dialogue with most of the film being music and expressions with the occasional gasp, laugh, or whistle to punctuate everything. It's rather sweet in a very odd and roundabout way how the businessman takes in this tiny little fledgling that seems to be counting on him and they find a new type of joy in learning how to fly.

Ruby is not your average teenage despite always wishing she was and her parent's insistence on staying hidden and safe. All of that changes following an accident when Ruby makes the choice to dive into the ocean to try and save her friend. After hearing her grandmama's story when she and her mother fought against the mermaid queen to save the ocean, you would think Ruby would be a bit more wary learning Chelsea's secret, however, the mermaid plays everything just right to be the innocent friend and confidant Ruby needs and feels like she can't find in her own family. Fortunately, it's not too late, and Ruby's friends prove she really didn't have anything to fear. The whole town really rallies around the krakens as their new mascots after the family saves the day rather publicly, confirming they aren't the monsters and threat the humans thought they were.

Not sure who the larger threat is here in some respects, the dragon, her Anita's own family. They're all more than a little lucky with that turn of events at the end, or her grandmother just may have gotten her wish, and killed more than a few people along the way given everyone was linked up psychically again, even if the marks weren't entirely fixed yet. Olaf seems to be the good guy for once, even if he still wants to hunt with Anita. Seems he may at least partially get his wish, though Edward would likely be along for the ride as well if they join the Harlequin hunting down the last of the known traitors. Both surprised and not with the outcome of the triplets, though really Ru seems to be the only one with any redeeming qualities at this point. Of course now we have to wonder what the next big bad enemy will be or if it will be a continuation of this arc as there can't ever be anything easy. Perhaps there will be some positive turns though with Asher now free and Richard seeming to hold to this new positive turn in his own therapy.

Ocean Waves

In some ways, this is similar to Only Yesterday as both focus on remembering the past of the main character as they travel somewhere. In this case, Taku is returning home for his high school reunion. There is a bit more focus on the romantic relationship side this time around, though Taku admits to being completely unaware until later. Really, the kid got lucky, especially after taking off to Tokyo and staying in the same hotel room, even if he went as far as sleeping in the bathtub. It would seem for all of their fighting and denials though, the feelings are mutual given the way it ends (cliffhanger ending, but still implied).
Only Yesterday

Taeko finds memories of her childhood resurfacing as she goes on vacation in the countryside. Thinking back on those early memories allows for some questions and realizations that may have been missed and had far different context looking back than perhaps it seemed in the moment as a young child. Even still, it comes with the realization that perhaps her life is not what she hoped, even if she has a "good" job in the city and by all rights a good life. It would seem that even if unintentionally, she may have found a place where she is truly happy for a change and can be excited for the life she wants to lead and the people in it.

This summary from IMDB really is accurate here:
An old man makes a living by selling bamboo. One day, he finds a princess in a bamboo. The princess is only the size of a finger. Her name is Kaguya. When Kaguya grows up, 5 men from prestigious families propose to her. Kaguya asks the men to find memorable marriage gifts for her, but the 5 men are unable to find what Kaguya wants. Then, the Emperor of Japan proposes to her.
The artwork itself is more like raw drawing and less refined than the more common Studio Ghibli movies. The story has a touch of similarity to Thumbelina as well, though of course with a Japan twist and Kaguya doesn't stay small but grows to the size of a human baby and continues to grow "like a bamboo shoot" as she ages and is raised by the bamboo farmers who found her. The movie may not be suitable for small children however as there is some nudity especially earlier on. Most of it is natural, as newborns are naked, breastfeeding, and child outgrowing clothes, but if you don't want to be answering some awkward questions at young ages, might be better to wait until they are at least old enough to understand. The skinny dipping might be more of a cultural thing in this case given onsen etiquette rather than some other culture's modesty standing. The father seems to get caught up in expectations and what "must" be while the mother and princess still long for their more simple life of before and the comforts of their family and friends and enjoying the life they have. Even her friend is at one point willing to abandon the family and life he's made while they've been apart to run away with her, but by then her fate is sealed, not on earth, but back on the moon where she came from.

Trying to find her own answers and happiness, Anna finds the best of friends and the key to her own forgotten past. What was making her cry and withdraw before may now become something to make her smile and celebrate instead, looking forward to new adventures with her friends in the future and remembering the friend and relative who cared for her more than anything.

Maomao has made it back to the palace, though this time working directly under Renshi rather than in the Inner Palace for the consorts. That doesn't necessarily keep her out of the Inner Palace though, especially between the consorts requesting her services and Renshi still pulling her into random investigations - though they may not be as random as they seem at first given the way they all link together. So far this series seems to be about one book ahead where the events in this volume 4 more closely align with volume 5 in the other version of this series. It's a bit strange knowing what is coming, but getting slightly different context and of course the different artwork reading through this version.

This seems like a very short addition to the series, though truthfully it's about the same number of chapters as the previous volumes, just no side story at the end. This time we get more of the backstory behind Ah-Duo and Lishu (not to be confused with Lihua, though their names are very similar). We don't really see as much of Lishu and Ah-Duo's mother/daughter relationship as we do in the other versions, however, in some ways, Maomao's observations regarding Ah-Duo and her story are even clearer here, especially the correlation between Ah-Duo's looks and Renshi's. Perhaps the only version so far that has been clearer is the anime when you can also clearly see their resemblance in color and not just in black and white as with these manga panels. While Maomao's hunches are not entirely confirmed still, it would be interesting if we ever did get some of those answers.

As with both the other version of the manga and the anime, she remains somewhat outside of events and naive about many of the underlaying meanings or what others are thinking (especially Renshi) while she just wants to go about her business while finishing her contract and ideally be allowed to dabble in her medicines as much as possible without arising suspicion or making some misstep that loses her head. Her nonchalance with poison especially is still startling and alarming to those around her as she continues to take things in stride and occasionally even savors them, as with the poisoned soup.

The Abandoned Empress 7

Tia seems to be getting along with everyone more than ever, especially finding great comfort in her better relationship with her father. At the same time, she finally had to draw the line with Allen which may have resulted in him leaving the kingdom for good after his own plotting put her life at risk and nearly blinded Carsein. The wheels of fate continue to turn and now it appears she is accepting that perhaps she could not change fate as much as she wished just as she was beginning to have hope that the changes were not only affecting her and perhaps the prince had changed as well. Despite her fears, it does seem as though the both the Emperor and the crown prince both still favor her, though she is blind to this with the Jiuen's arrival. If anything, the prince seems to have difficulty convincing Tia that he is sincere and does genuinely care for her this time around, though whose to say what Jiuen's arrival may or may not force in the way of changing things given the prophecy and politics at play.

Earwig and the Witch
Earwig and the Witch (2020)

This is a very different and more modern art style than we usually see in Ghibli films. Earwig is an orphan who finds herself in the care of a rather self centered witch and an eccentric mandrake while not knowing her own history. Turns out she may have some real ties to these two strangers that she's trying to make her new life with. Can't say I love the CGI style of the art used here even if it is more common in other animation studios these days. A lot of the detail that Ghibli is known for seems lost in this one and instead we have a large focus on a lot of negativity with a giant side of questions until the mandrake seems to take the Earwig and she becomes a bit of a spoiled princess learning magic and making a new life with this odd family.
The Red Turtle
The Red Turtle (2016)
My rating: 2 of 5 stars
This is mostly a silent film with very little sound, either from nature or from the actual characters themselves to tell the story. A mariner is trapped on an rather serene island and while he has the knowledge to build increasingly stronger rafts to attempt his escape, the very nature and animals surrounding the island keep him in place, especially once he finds the turtle isn't just a turtle. Their family is rather peaceful most of the time, though the son leaves soon after a large storm nearly tears them all apart and does not appear to ever return. While the silence is a stark difference in the story telling and leaves some guess work in the sequence as to what is actually happening or being portrayed, it also oddly works in most ways here, though it's still unclear why the turtle and if there is a trigger to the transformation.

This is the Kurata Minoji form of the The Apothecary Diaries, not to be confused with the Nekokurage version that can currently be found in America. This version can only be read in Japanese or if you can find translations online currently and more closely follows the version found in the light novels. While I do prefer the art style in the Nekokurage version and the anime, this is still interesting to read as there are small nuances and details that are different between the versions. It can be a tad confusing however, as they do use different names for some of the characters depending on the version you are reading (for example, Jinshi and Renshi are the same character, as are Gyokuyou and YuYe). Aside from needing to keep the characters straight as there aren't any new introductions (at least not yet), it's still entertaining. If you love the series, it's worth trying to check it out for those details.

Of any of the characters, Richard is the biggest surprise this time around. He seems to have done nearly a complete 180 in his therapy and is making phenomenal strides in his understanding and attempting to be there for the people he cares about and his triumvirate. Perhaps most shockingly of all is his beginning to come out to some people as a werewolf, where that was something that was strictly not allowed at all and a large blocker to his participation in many of the situations where they needed wolf and Jason or someone else would have to act as a stand-in to pull from the pack ties. Ru shows promise as well, but Rodina seems to be becoming a larger problem. Still don't love the direction this has taken overall in the story arc, but it is good to see the main characters at least attempting to be more understanding and accepting, especially as it seems they will need all the power they can gather against this new threat.
