The Emperor's Caretaker 6 by Ichiha Hiiragi

Between the events with Linhua's uncle and the late emperor's funeral, there seems to be more than enough to keep everyone busy. It's rather adorable how Zhiyou's mind works and he's starting to identify ways to make people happier going forward, starting with those closest to him. We even get some more background into Linhua's father as events unfold, not that Souren or Xiuying seem inclined to let him off the hook any time soon. Linhua gets awfully flustered around Souren still, especially considering their relationship and how open Souren is with her, especially when they have some time together without the prying eyes of others, though Xiuying is very protective and seems to be watching them like a hawk.

The Emperor's Caretaker 5 by Ichiha Hiiragi

Zhiyou has his first inspection in the city, but he's planned an extra special surprise for Linhua. Curious who's idea exactly it was, but it does turn out rather advantageous for Souren. It's also hilarious to see Zhiyou interact with Linhua's younger siblings. Even though it seems everything was planned in advance, Zhiyou doesn't seem too pleased by Linhua staying home rather than being in the palace. Souren seems to be of the same mindset, though being older and more used to playing roles expected of him, manages not to appear as overtly concerned. Perhaps it's warranted though given the events on the way home and Souren's understandable panic. Linhua gets to meet another of the women who serve Souren under special circumstances. It's interesting how each of the people close to him that Linhua meets end up taking a liking to her. Just who exactly is this mysterious puppet master behind the scenes though, and will the link to the Mo family be uncovered?

The Emperor's Caretaker 4 by Ichiha Hiiragi

We meet Linhua's uncle in this volume, and Souren seems to be looking for ways he can warn others away from Linhua even though their engagement still has to be kept secret. Linhua is as flustered as ever by Souren's attention, but it's also rather sweet how he attempts to be there for her. We also get to see Zhiyou act more like a child for a little bit with the attendant selections. There's just enough of a hint of ongoing drama to leave one wondering what's coming next, but overall this is a rather wholesome addition to the series.

The Emperor's Caretaker 3 by Ichiha Hiiragi

Well that progressed fast. It seems perhaps the young emperor does like Linhua even more than she thought, as does his uncle Souren. Even the rest of her family seems shocked by this turn of events. Fortunately, it seems that all of this chaos isn't keeping the young emperor down for long or destroying the newfound connection he's gained with Souren. Really, there have been massive improvements just in the time Linhua has been at the court and observed their interactions. It will be curious to see some of the other reactions to this new developement, especially once the emperor no longer requires a caretaker at the age of maturity - if the series goes that far considering the title. There are more references to the novels which go much further, as this volume of the manga apparently wraps up volume 1, however, I haven't had any luck finding it.

Her brother seems to be on her side if anything, simply wanting her to be happy, and not overly concerned with her marriage prospects, despite their father insisting that she should "retire soon" to get married. There is a lot of progress with the royal family, learning their stories and even about the emperor's mother. Perhaps some unlikely friendships, but rather peaceful all in all, at least until the cliffhanger of an ending. The side story in the back is also rather amusing and easy to picture given the way Souren tends to approach most things.

This is a bit different from the usual types of stories in this genre. While family honor and traditions are emphasized a lot, Linhua is also perfectly content on her own. Her father is thrilled with his schemes to find her an influential match, but Linhua and her brother seem to have a different opinion of events, and have their own methods of turning the tide in their favor. At least Linhua has the marriage proposals under control for the time being. We get to know a lot of the characters in this volume and it sets the stage well, but it's otherwise a very mellow tale. We'll see if the next volume picks up the story line at the same pace and if anything else comes to light.
