It's rather hilarious when Renshi requests Maomao be "returned" to him for awhile but the palace returns with the clarification that he is requesting to "borrow" her from them. Of course, so far Maomao has solved all of the main mysteries that have crossed her path, though there are still some background thoughts that remain unsolved, like the palace maid who runs the ghost stories meeting. It seems there may be some things with this hunt and especially about Renshi that she hasn't truly given much though to yet. We're catching up to where the other version of the manga also is at this point, too, so not a lot as far as new perspectives or material, though you never know what may pop out between re-reading and the slight differences in the storytelling.

It's much slower reading these as translations are available during production, but the story is still enjoyable and easy to fall back into. In this installment, we see the queen's pavilion and solve the riddle behind the queen's eyesight and the tests previously used to determine the next emperor. It's a bit disturbing how quickly the emperor jumps on the idea of making Maomao a concubine, though he backs down rather quickly and is very pointed with his later rejection. Of course Renshi was also very displeased, though all of the men seemed equally impressed that Maomao solved the puzzle. Now we even have the dowager empress's attention. Truthfully, Maomao learns several secrets in her odd work with Renshi and the palace. It's lucky for everyone that she has no ambition really outside of her medicine and learning, so gaining wealth or playing political games are the last things she has any interest in. If anything, it's a tad confusing trying to keep track of where Maomao is supposed to be and with whom as she keeps bouncing around constantly, even if she's supposed to be in one place, as she keeps getting pulled into all of these unusual situations.

Safe & Sound in the Arms of an Elite Knight 2 by Fuyu Aoki

Chloe's trauma is starting to resurface, but as usual, this doesn't phase Lloyd. If anything, he's just angry at her mother once he learns a little bit about Chloe's fear. The side story at the end with the earrings is absolutely hilarious, too. Exactly something just adorable yet awkward with a side of sweetness that fits these two odd birds. Even the flashback to Chloe's original home and her mother demanding that she be found fits with the original story, though it's somewhat surprising they haven't already written her off as dead after all the winter weather and the time. On the other hand, we get to see the town folk for the first time in this volume as well. The shop keeper especially comes across just as boisterous and energetic as ever. While there are no official listings yet, this definitely hasn't covered the entire light novel series yet, so hopefully the story will continue with the new artwork, and maybe even a few more fun side stories at the end of them to enjoy.

This seems to follow the light novel fairly closely, though we get to see the characters drawn out instead of just a few art pages in the book and the story in the volume is shy of how far the story goes in the first light novel, which is usually about how manga and light novels compare for the same series. Chloe's innocence really stands out, as does Lloyd's rather unique perspective and maybe a bit of loneliness. Really, they're both rather lost souls all in all. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the series compares.

Well now, this is an unexpected twist. It's understandable how Agnes would have trouble believing Lucilleur, even if her own father and his brother are also pleading his case, though her father is thankfully ultimately on her side and willing to support whatever she chooses. Lucilleur takes things a bit to the extreme. Some curiosity if with the wedding and Lucilleur's new vow if Agnes' side of their engagement contract is reinstated. It's never addressed directly, but it seems like there would be additional benefits with the locations, let alone faithfulness, that would be of benefit both to the political factions as well as to themselves personally should anything happen again in the future. Lucilleur seems to have more of a jealous streak than previously thought possible too, which is sort of hilarious. Hopefully, they both learn to open up and communicate better, especially after affirming they do love each other.

While the initial explicit scene is somewhat expected given the title, the events when the prince comes looking for Agnes are not expected at all. Add that to Lady Lilie and her plots and relationship with Lucilleur and it's not much of a wonder Agnes would want to leave, even going so far as leaving the country given the political climate and the risk to her family. But for all of Lucilleur's maneuvering to break their engagement in the first place, why hasn't he broken his side of the magical contract binding them, and why does he personally take so much time and interest in Agnes after he's the one who discarded her to begin with while still showing care for Lilie even in front of her. More than a few daggers to the heart, but with a major cliffhanger ending with Lucilleur seeming to be the one trying to save her?

This is a direct sequel to Music in the Rain, though this time we mostly see Zuli and Alejandro themselves with references to their relationships with Zara. There is so much backstory and potential in these shorts that they are thoroughly enjoyable while still leaving the reader wanting for more. Hopefully they will get more stories in the future, be they additional short stories to fill in their tale, or their own spotlight in the main series. The author really got it with just how influential music can be, and how it is different for all those playing or listening to the piece, not necessarily exactly the same.

It's clear that some of Mysteria's memories are missing at this point, though not why or how the people around her may tie into those memories. It seems Melos and this new orphan figure may at least be somewhere at the heart of it. Raid still seems to be set on getting closer to Mysteria, but so do many of the others, both guys and girls (though the girls seem to mostly be in an idol worship and friendship way). What's up with the janitor and the new headmaster, too? Both of them seem to have a lot of mystery around their stories, but are both friendly with Mysteria when she sees them, though she may not realize who the duke is just yet. Overall, a lot more questions and confusion in this volume, and not a lot of answers.

Hachi and Eito both seem to have a lot in common, especially when it comes to their names and the constant number 8 jokes. The only difference is, Eito is a nickname for Akito, except for some reason, Eito doesn't mind his childhood name when it comes form Hachi. Sort of an odd tie to start things off with, but the usual slow burn that other series from this author have shown. Also similar, there's a sudden moment of clarity where they suddenly realize what they're feeling and why. Perhaps the most different here is that both boys realize on their own around the same time. Except neither thinks it'll work for some reason, so one tries to avoid the other, while the other tries to brace themselves for rejection. Also as usual, there isn't really an ending given their relationship is slowly evolving, but they're both graduating and heading to college. College is never really addressed though - are they going to the same one or ones that are nearby so they can keep in touch? Or are they going to be too far away and risk long distance or ending things just as they are beginning? Could easily see this one picked up again for a sequel at some point, or it could remain a solo peace indefinitely and it'll be up to the reader for how they want their story to end.

Red One

Red One (2024)

I'll admit I haven't used my Prime account very often for movies as most things we're interested in watching we have on Fandango at Home (previously Vudu). In this case though, Red One is currently exclusively on Amazon or in theaters, so why not take advantage of the Prime benefits we're already paying for and stream the movie from the comfort of our own home. Online reviews aren't very kind to this one, but more than a few call out that critics may a bit off on their ratings as those who give it a chance seem to genuinely enjoy the film. While there's a fair amount of action and monsters, it's done in fair humor and played up to be different and yet a lot of fun. This is a very different take on your more traditional Christmas movies, even those that focus on Santa himself. Here Santa (aka "Red One") is kidnapped on Christmas Eve. Now it's up to ELF (Enforcement, Logistics, and Fortification) and MORA (Mythological Oversight and Restoration Authority) to find Nicholas and restore order in the North Pole in time for Christmas. While most of the myths we see come to life are understandably from winter lore, including Krampus and Gryla, we do see other creatures and hear about a few others along the way as well. Especially with this being live action and the amount of material out there, it's rather impressive how they managed to create something entirely unique and fun. Even the acronyms are right on the nose, lending to more than a few one-liners that earn a chuckle along the way.

Well, someone finally found out, but thankfully they seem to be fully supportive and even had a similar experience, though their relationship ended where Chiharu and Wataru are still going strong. If anything, they seem to be doing better and better, though Wataru definitely doesn't like it when Chiharu leaves. Wataru is rather amusing as a drunk, and the memory thing could be problematic, but he seems to have good friends who watched out for him until Chiharu could reach him, and of course Chiharu is always trying to take care of him when he's allowed to. Still doesn't feel like an ending really, but these two are still sweet to see together.

My Summer of You 2 by Nagisa Furuya

For some reason, I thought this was a one-shot, but it turns out it's now part of a series. Wataru and Chiharu are now in university, which means Chiharu is back in Tokyo and their much closer again than at the end of volume one. Wataru is still a bit dense and behind Chiharu when it comes to navigating their new relationship and his own emotions, but overall these two are still very sweet and clearly still fond of each other if nothing else. A little surprising that Wataru's friends at least haven't picked up on anything, though it seems at least one of his co-workers may have put the puzzle together. Really, no one seems to know other than the two of them, which is surprising. Wouldn't be too surprised if there are a few other crushes on either side of their friendships with others, though neither one of them seems to think about anyone else at all. Fairly impressive really, especially given they've been long distance and much younger all through school before university, and it doesn't sound like they get a lot of time there either between studying and work.

The Two Lions

The Two Lions by Nagisa Furuya

While I wouldn't call this a favorite, the art is well done and the story is tasteful and sweet with a very realistic point of view and easy storytelling. Leo's past especially very obviously influences his current point of view and take on things, though perhaps as a result he's a little too easygoing with Junpei. Perhaps the only thing that may be a little sudden is how quickly Junpei starts making moves, even before he realizes what he's doing and why, though some people really are rather dense until something something smacks them right in the face. Lucky for him perhaps, it seems Leo is still on the same page, or at least willing to go along for the sake of their current relationship and see how it all works out. Hard to say there's truly an ending in some sense as the relationship is still very new and uncertain, but that leaves a lot up to the reader's imagination too.

The Wild Robot (2024)

Based off the book series, this is the most recent DreamWorks masterpiece. Roz is a robot that is very out of place as she finds herself on her own in the wilderness with no knowledge of how she got there or why she is there, and none of the locals seem to like her. Through a series of misfortunes, she slowly gets to know a few brave souls who eventually see something in her aside from the "monster" and give her a chance, especially once she has Brightbill is in her care. With the unlikely help of Fink, a lonely if tricky fox, the trio learns what it means to be part of a family and eventually even something greater as the entire island has more than a few reasons to come together. The ending is especially touching and hopeful, with more than a few lessons mixed into the story if you want them.

The King’s Beast 14

The King’s Beast 14 by Rei Tōma

It seems the previous emperor and Tenyou may have already had a plan in motion to secure Kyoko's cooperation, so the twins just needed to decide his fate. They may have an idea of where the trouble on the border is coming from as well, but it seems that may spell out doom for one of the princes, or maybe not given these new visions if they're shared. From the references, it seems like this may be another tie in to Dawn of the Arcana, though I haven't yet read that series. It would be interesting if reading both at the same time to see how it may fill out the story or if it seems to be completely separate. We get some sweet moments between Tenyou and Rangetsu as well as they continue to circle each other. At least it seems our inner circle of characters are in a better place for the moment, even if they are still facing challenges in this new world.

Well, Lady Karen is back, but she seems conflicted between liking Abigail and her family's position and what they've told her she must strive to attain and how to act like a proper lady of the court. All in all, she seems fairly harmless at this stage with her internal conflict around the Abigail and her friendship with Blanche. The new problem it seems is this Gideon character. Veritas caused a bit of a stir as well, but hopefully won't be so lonely now. How Sabrian and Abigail can be so observant and yet so dense at the same time remains a mystery, too. And why was Blanche so happy looking at that old portrait, especially with how stiff it looked? At least the birthday celebrations seem to be going well, especially now that no one is falling ill again, and the royal family really does seem to be getting closer. A close call there when the queen mother came to visit, but fortunately not very long lasting, especially when we have a rather adorable scene of the family coming together to talk things out. Sometimes, Sabrian does get it right.

Sabrian really is starting to resemble a puppy when it comes to his interactions with Abigail. It's a bit of a miracle really that with the both of them constantly confirming how much they are glad that they've become a real family and are still together, neither one of them seems to have a clue as far as their actual relationship as a married couple. At least it seems as if Lady Karen has temporarily faded into the background after Abigail helps her out at the tea party. Somewhat curious that her family haven't made any big noise, though the incident with the mermaids could have been some other scheme of theirs given Sabrian's comment about the captain. The queen mother returning to the palace also seems to be a bit of a bad omen, right on top of when the family is coming back together, at least as far as anyone else can see. More than a few adorable moments with Sabrian backing up Abigail and Blanche starting to really latch onto having a family. Even if Karen isn't right in the thick of things at the moment though, why does Raven keep visiting Abigail? That's another odd one that doesn't seem to add up entirely.

This Stoke family seems to be trouble, including Lady Karen. It seems unintentional and entirely just due to her new lifestyle, but Abigail doesn't seem threatened by Lady Karen at all. If anything, the only time she really seems awkward is when she's with Sabrian, though at least now we know why he's always been so distant really. It's true that with their nightly visits and regular family meals, as well as the amount of time Abigail and Blanche spend with each other, they could very easily give off the appearance of a happy royal family. It's no wonder the question of their sleeping arrangments has come up again, though it seems Sabrian is struggling with it more than Abigail. What would Abigail do about Veritas if they shared rooms, too? And now Sabrian knows about Veritas at least vaguely, even if just some faceless friend. Without even really meaning to, it seems Abigail just honestly being herself is winning her those friends she longed for and slowly erasing the history of distrust she stepped into with this new life.

Abigail may be making more progress than she thinks she is, at least with Princess Blanche at the very least. The king is another bit of mystery that doesn't seem to entirely add up just yet, but if anything, he does seem to be losing some if his ingrained distrust of Abigail. Not sure what his issue with dancing is, and why it seems to be a much bigger deal dancing with Abigail than with Blanche, but maybe we'll learn in the next volume. That mirror sure is coming in handy too, though it's highly amusing the way Abigail and Veritas almost bicker back and forth, though Veritas is oddly useful at times, especially when it comes to recording certain things with mirrors.

This is an interesting take on the classic Snow White tale with an isekai twist. Abigail clearly remembers her first life working as a designer when she awakens as Princess Blanche's stepmother (aka, Snow White). Her step-daughter and the palace employees are scared of her while her husband wants nothing to do with her, though he also refuses to take a second wife when his ministers pester him about trying for a son to secure the succession of the throne against his brother. Abigail has no interest in any of this though and merely wants to live happily, preferably while being allowed to dress Princess Blanche up herself as she just about drives herself mad thinking of all the adorable things she could wear. It doesn't seem to be so easy to convince everyone around her she's changed, though perhaps she's making some progress at least with her maids and the princess.

Oh dear, it seems like there's new drama, especially coming from the crown prince and possibly Elias. Meanwhile Jeremy and Norra still seem to be rivals, but also oddly friendly in some ways, especially when it comes to protecting Shuri. There may be some foreshadowing given Shuri's thoughts on what would truly strengthen the crown rather than the price cozying up to the church and how they both look up to her. Elias may be in much deeper than he thought as well, though we can only really wait to see how that all unfolds. Cardinal Richelieu is also making waves again, both directly with Shuri and using the prince, not that the prince realizes he's only really overhearing what they want him to in order to use him to their own gains.

Surprisingly, things seem to be working out well for Anthy, even if she did still get an ear full from multiple sources when it came to her plan to save Claude. With the exception perhaps of her sympathy for Jeanette's situation, and how clueless the other girl seems to be, most issues seem to have resolved in a manner that she can at least be satisfied with if not actually happy about. Of course the highlight is that Claude not only finally remembers her, but seems to at least have some level of understanding and acceptance when it comes to his own feelings now. We even get a glimpse of her mother along with some more family history, which rounds out the emotional side of things nicely. Even Lucas seems to be rather pleased, even if he does rib Anthy a bit about how he at least temporarily seems to be filling in as her personal on-call healer for all this chaos.

This volume picks up during the moon spirit arc and ends with the unveiling of some family drama in the crystal palace. While things may not go exactly as expected, it is probably the best outcome all around for everyone. It is rather surprising though how lenient the crystal palace consort chooses to be in this case, and her bewilderment asking if the slap was not enough in this rendition is all the more hilarious for how the situation plays out in this art style. It seems like there could be a lot of trouble if anyone realized just how much medicine Maomao knows and technically is allowed to practice in the inner palace, especially given she is both a woman and not a doctor. Fortunately, it seems she has a lot more support than she knows, of course not excluding Renshi who seems to be one of the top authorities in the inner palace aside from the emperor himself given he sees to all of the consorts and the running of the place.

Wicked

Admittedly, I went into this a little cautiously optimistic and skeptical at the same time as I'd heard mixed reviews and love the musical, so it could have been great or a total disaster as an on screen adaptation, especially once the announcement was made it would be split into 2 separate films, with the second part coming out the end of next year. While it's not absolutely perfect, this does a pretty grand job with the story, and the stopping point actually makes a lot of sense for the split story, matching with the natural intermission break in the musical. For those who are fans, or even just like a bit of nostalgia, watch closely and you'll see a few easter eggs that really add a bit of extra fun to the show. It's rather impressive the way this has been filmed as well, with most of the sets actually being built and CGI used more as an enhancement than the overall production with everything on a green screen. It gives everything a touch of more realism while still being fantastic in entirely unique and different ways that really only make sense for a world of fantasy like this one. The main songs from the musical have mostly also been kept true to their original forms, with adaptations where they fit the actresses' voices better, which makes sense really. It's rather impressive that the majority of the singing was done on stage and not just in a studio for production on this one, especially with how popular the soundtrack is (yes, I totally realize that's one of the songs too 😉).

While I expected my daughter to at least enjoy the movie as she had recently gone with me to see the musical on stage, I did not expect my younger son to be interested in seeing this one as he'd had no interest in the play. Short of the monkey scene, which a friend had warned me avoiding any spoilers might be rather intense for those who are more sensitive or empathic (which my daughter is pretty big time) they both also said they loved the film and would definitely watch it again. The music was familiar as well, even to my son who didn't join us for the musical as it's part of my driving playlist, so he's heard the songs growing up even if he hadn't seen the show and didn't know the story itself. He's certainly not old enough to have read the books (neither one of them are, though my daughter is getting close if she wants more of the background and details to the tale later on). This will be one we'll look forward to the digital release and plan to see the sequel when it comes out. Hopefully it will be just as enjoyable.

Some day, maybe Hana will learn to read the fine print when it comes to dealing with Saku. This volume covers from the first trip out to see Hana's new "oceanside villa" to the twins joining school and Saku's brother filling in for their forced battle on the school grounds, though he doesn't know the real reason is because Hana is still hiding her powers. Of course she can't hide them for long, and even acknowledges here that she knows sooner or later, there will be no more hiding and her world will be forced to change. As with the others, it's nice to see the artwork that goes with the story, and rather hilarious to see the interactions as various characters pursue their love interests - or run away from them in near panicked desperation sometimes. Hana has a bit of a violent streak, though she does well for the most part hiding it with her laid back posturing at school. Unfortunately for Saku, he seems to excel at setting her off.

We see both Akane and Kogami back for this installment of the series, though Akane may be in some trouble at the end, not as a result of her psycho-pass, but because of the public actions she chooses to take in order to call into light the questions and issues regarding how the psycho-pass system currently operates. There is a bit of a fight in this movie across multiple departments and the paramilitary group known as the Peacebreakers trying to obtain information from a murdered researcher. This research has the potential to change the current Sibyl System, though if it is truly for the better remains up for debate. Things get ugly pretty fast, and it's clear their own system is working against them as their weapons won't register a threat to activate and their opponents don't seem to stay down. This series as a whole can be rather confusing with all of the moving pieces and the potential moral dilemmas up for debate. Really gives you some food for thought if you think about it, especially in the current world where AI is actually gaining more and more popularity and use.

Operation Strix may be in danger unless Anya can earn another Stella star by winning the cooking class competition coming up. As a result, Loid takes the family on a trip to try the dessert Anya will make, leading to a series of rather hilarious misinterpretations and landing in trouble with a few extra missions on the side. Really, it's a miracle Loid and Yor haven't figured out what the other really is or at least what they are actually capable of at this point. No clue where this fits into the manga, or even if it does at all, or if it's just a fun side story with the goal of earning a stella given it ends up being delayed overall. Some of the animation style changes for Anya's imagination scenes which are pretty out there, and it's rather hilarious with the details in certain scenes how Loid and Yor can be so focused and perfect in the face of anything while Anya looks like she's about ready to lose it all. Overall, this could be watched as part of the series or a stand alone movie, and does well on its own.

While the story overall remains the same, there are small details that are added with each version that bring the overall story together even more and remains entertaining for any who really enjoy this series. This volume continues with the gunpowder arc, where Rishe is gathering materials to try and help convince Arnold to enter into an alliance with Coyolles instead of invading it while also trying to keep Michel from going full doomsday with his gunpowder revelation. She needs more than a little help to prove to him he isn't only good for creating ways to kill people, but Arnold seems okay with that and going along with her schemes as usual, though it certainly looks like he won't bend up until the very end. There's no mention of Michel creating the pocket watch in this version, but we do get an extended and very lovely side scene with Rishe's ring at the end of the story. Of course there's also Arnold's reaction to her declaration about wanting to end her engagement - really poor choice of words there or at the very least lack of rather significant clarification needed. Poor Arnold probably got a bit of whiplash with that bomb following up their little moment with her ring. As usual, these two really do fit well together. It will be interesting to see how everything plays out in the end and if Rishe can really avoid dying this time around if she's with Arnold; she just may not have planned to end up as involved in all of these events, let alone actually getting attached to her new "husband."

CSI: NY

CSI: NY (2004)

My rating: 3.5 of 4 stars


As with other branches of this series, they overlap a lot, to the point where some storylines start or continue in episodes from the other series to complete those arcs, so watching only one may end up with some holes along the way, though they aren't too noticeable unless you are looking for them or watch all of the series to be able to see where those characters and stories overlap. As the title suggests, this branch originates in New York, though of course some cases may take them to other locations. Also similar to the other series, the main character is the head of the local crime lab, and there may be a bit of romance thrown in as well with all the drama and solving murders along with various other cases, though most involve some form of death along the way in order to end up with the crime lab.

Moana 2

Overall, the family seemed to agree that while this wasn't as good as the original movie, it was still highly enjoyable and a well done sequel, which is saying something as a lot of sequels tend to fall short of the originals, especially when the first one was so well received. We avoided any spoilers, so we weren't really sure what the plan was for the story going into the movie. Moana's new little sis was an interesting addition. While we do see the tribe out on the water now, they are not all out at sea as indicated by the end of the original movie. Instead, they go as far as they need to for fish, but Moana appears the be the only real "wayfinder" in the tribe. A title that may get her in trouble with some other powers out at sea. Luckily for her, she has some unexpected help along the way, included a rather motley crew from her homeland, and of course, Maui. As Moana points out in the movie too, "still not a princess," which ties back to their first meeting and could also be linked to remaining her own franchise and not being pulled into the Disney Princess lineup. The ending is somewhat expected but with a rather unexpected twist to it all in all. Seems Maui may not be the only demigod in the lineup for this franchise.

While it seems Kurosawa makes it through his challenges okay thanks to Adachi and the rest of their coworkers, Tsuge isn't having as much luck. The drama adaptation is good news, but it seems like Minato's jealousy may stem from some past relationship experience that went badly, and he's not so willing to take the whole magic thing well as Kurosawa was when Adachi told him. Hopefully the two can talk and at least sort things out to be friendly again, but it's not looking good at the moment. A little surprising we don't have a scene with Tsuge going to Adachi for advice about it, though maybe that's just because he knows things obviously worked out for Adachi with Kurosawa and that he did tell him.

It seems the housing hunt is still on, and any big travel plans are on hold, but Adachi and Kurosawa still find ways to celebrate and be together. They even set up a double date with Tsuge and Minato to help them out. Seems like Tsuge may be running into some of the same challenges that Adachi and Kurosawa did at first, especially where Tsuge is relying on the magic and not really communicating with Minato directly. Kurosawa may have some new challenges as well with this new project that is keeping them close to home.

Well the cat is out of the bag at least to their closest friends and coworkers, and we get the wedding. Tsuge and Minato seem to be settling in well together and are an unexpected resource for Adachi and Kurosawa, especially Minato with his connections to help them find a new place to live. While Adachi does have a bit of a low point worrying that their relationship is the reason they're struggling with house hunting and wedding planning, it turns out they really do have a lot of support and seems like most things so far have worked out well. Kurosawa's planning folders might be a little daunting, but Adachi doesn't know about those... yet.

We get more of Tsuge and Minato's story here, which seems to be looking up after a bit of a slump where they weren't in contact with each other. Can't blame Minato here either as Tsuge really did leave things off on a really weird note before he ended up touring. It's cute how they come back together after the show, though. 

Meanwhile, Adachi and Kurosawa are still working together and when they remember, house hunting. It seems like maybe Kurosawa's parents are warming up to the two of them as well given the interaction in this volume. Rokkaku is also still oddly endearing and yet a tad helpless at the same time both when it comes to their work in the office and his observations about Adachi and Kurosawa.... double dates? Really?

No update on Tsuge and Minato this time around as there's a lot going on with Adachi and Kurosawa. Adachi has finished his work in Nagasaki and returned home to Tokyo to live with Kurosawa, as well as both of them facing the dreaded first meeting of the parents. Adachi's family seems very supportive, while Kurosawa's seems will take some time and work to really convince them they are sincere and won't regret being together. The Tokyo office doesn't seem to have picked up on their relationship either except for a certain office BL fangirl who doesn't know anything specific but seems to ship the boys a lot. Otherwise, they seem to be settling into their life together pretty well for the most part, just so long as they remember to communicate, or there may be a few more fights in the future.

It's good to see Adachi and Kurosawa really supporting each other and learning to be in a relationship, especially without the use of Adachi's gift to aid in their interactions or communications. It does seem to be bringing out a bit of jealousy in Adachi though, which is a little funny given how stressed Kurosawa has been over all of their coworkers and even Tsuge. Tsuge, on the other hand, seems to still be in the early stages, though he may have his back up against the proverbial wall now with Minato's recent question. He really has been a great support though with Minato's auditions, and Minato has clearly warmed up to him a lot given their phone calls and visits, both at home with Udon and in town.

Tsuge is rather hilarious with this "gangster" look, though it's too bad it seems to be a bust for it's intended purposes. He may not need it though, depending on what Minato "almost" was going to do there. Now it seems Adachi is finally starting to understand actually communicating with Kurosawa, and that may be just in the nick of time if the magic really has disappeared for good. He seems rather confused on why it would disappear though, so maybe there are some additional theories or information on this strange ability that Adachi and Tsuge both had there. There's still the matter of this possible transfer as well that remains unresolved. Looks like more discussions are still needed in the future.

Tsuge seems to at least be hitting friend territory with his crush, though being seen as a pseudo dad is definitely a blow. On the other hand, Kurosawa takes the magic reveal surprisingly well, even using it to his own advantage in the office. It looks like Adachi isn't out of the woods yet though with the bosses now seeing him in a new light and assuming he's still single. Sometimes there are more downsides than you think in hiding a relationship.

There's a little bit of overlap as the previous volume has a preview for the next one, and the volumes are fairly short, but they are still enjoyable. Adachi is working himself up over Kurosawa's birthday and if he should tell him about being able to read his mind or not, and if so how. Just how much of an advantage does he think he's getting? Though he does have a point with some possibly seeing it as an invasion of privacy. Not that his friend seems to be doing much better either. They're both so awkward with a dose of denial and desperation that is hilarious.

Adachi really is a hilarious character, while also very unsure of himself. Surprisingly, even when he thinks he has a chance with a female coworker he has been interested in previously, he realizes he still leans towards Kurosawa. Not that he has any clue what to do beyond that realization or what being in a relationship will actually mean for the both of them. His friend is also making some progress, if minimal, with his delivery boy crush. We get another tie in as well with some backstory realizing this is the same dancer classmate that Adachi and Kurosawa's new coworker refers to during their party night.

This continues to be mostly light hearted with a good dose of humor and slow burn romance as the cherry on top. Adachi may be starting to realize his own feelings, but is mostly still in denial, though Kurosawa's sister may have forced things a bit with her appearance. While Adachi lacks a lot of self awareness, even with this magic thing going on, he seems to be oddly perceptive when it comes to those around him. Even his novelist friend seems surprised when he realizes his new main character seems to mirror a certain delivery boy.

The set up for this story is oddly hilarious and adorable at the same time. After reaching the age of 30 while still a virgin, Adachi finds himself able to read other people's thoughts when he touches them. This inadvertently leads to the realization that the office hottie everyone is crushing on and thinks is perfect is actually crushing on him. To add to the hilarity, he seeks advice from his best friend who is a romance novelist and doesn't believe the telepathy bit at all.... until he himself turns 30 and the tables are now turned on him as well. In Adachi's case, he can't seem to make up his mind if he's interested in Kurosawa or just thinks of him as a friend, but Kurosawa seems to be almost too perfect with how respectful and thoughtful he tries to be (personal fantasies aside of course). On the other hand, our novelist here seems to be the one most interested in learning more and person he wants to see more is the one being standoffish. In both cases, it seems this new magic may be more useful than originally thought.

Misaki and Arikawa are finally on the same page and moving on together in multiple ways. It's rather cute when Arikawa has to leave to help his family and the two come back together. Really, Misaki is maybe a bit too timid at times still, but he seems to be learning and happy with Arikawa, so overall, the story is still rather sweet. We get more answers regarding Misaki's past and find out even the professor knows this old friend of his that seems like a controlling stalker through the majority of the series. Misaki is comfortable enough at least that he's willing to draw the line and take a stand for his new relationship and future, so that's good to see. If anything, Arikawa is rather protective of Misaki while Misaki's comes across as more meek, so it's good to see him take a stand and be able to resolve things on his own, even if he may not have come out as unscathed as he claimed.

We get the backstory on Misaki's necklace and meet his mysterious caller, who seems more like a stalker really. This guy screams bad vibes and overcontrolling jerk. It's nice to see Arikawa stand up to him, even if Misaki still runs off again. It seems Misaki really did have a hard childhood, though it makes sense now why he spends so much time in the lab given that was his connection to his grandfather, and in a lot of ways, his first love, even if that is a seriously toxic relationship. Misaki seems to be afraid of any relationship as a result of what he's experienced so far and how he keeps falling for boys, but given the parallels he draws with Arikawa and his reactions to the few kisses they've shared up until now, it seems safe to say he's at least interested.

The art is nice, but the story is very mixed up and difficult to follow at times with a very slow burn. Who is this guy calling Misaki? What about these dreams of Arikawa's and why he seems so convinced that he knew Misaki before they started working in the lab together? There's more questions than answers, but it does seem at least in the lab these two get along and like Misaki isn't truly as upset with Arikawa's presence as he acted like in the beginning, especially given his line of thought when they're by the riverside together.

The story itself is cute how the boys are similar in real life to their characters, even though Usagi plays a female character in the game. The only real downside to the story is the age gap. It wouldn't be as bad if Gakuto were at least in college, though suppose then he wouldn't be living with his crazy uncle who turns out to be Usagi's boss. If you can manage to forget about the age gap, it's sweet, but that's a major flag that is concerning at this stage when the story takes place. The uncle is also hilarious and oddly supportive short of the pedo jab, which is honestly deserved with Gakuto being in high school. He even goes as far as creating a similar character in the game and acting like he's trying to hit on Gakuto like he's trying to test the two of them or something, yet he's also cheering Gakuto on and telling him he did good nabbing Usagi, which is really weird when you think about it. Overall, the characters are fun, just need Gakuto to grow up a bit ideally before they're so up close and personal or planning weddings.

This is a rather awkward workplace romance. Not only is Shima sure he's gay, he's also sure Togawa is straight.... and his boss. That's not to mention that just the scent of smoke or alcohol can make Shima sick, and Togawa seems to have a bit of an addiction to both substances. So how does one who loves drinking and smoking and admits he likes women and wants a family decide he's fallen in love with his younger male coworker? Shima struggles with that one a lot, and adding it to the reason he transferred to this job to begin with, adds up to a lot of self doubt and thinking it's all going to end anyway, so he should be prepared for that without putting up a fuss. It's both fast paced and yet real at the same time while still being a tad cringe and painful on the emotional roller coaster.

Miyabi and Haruto are in college together, but it's not all sunshine and roses. We rarely see Haruto in a classroom setting, with the only indications of school really being telling Miyabi he can focus more on his studies and meeting up for lunch. Otherwise it's a lot of coworkers and domestic scenes with more insecurities, especially when it's brought up how alphas can have multiple mates, not that Haruto has any plans or desire to do so. Misunderstandings aside, it's clear these two still care about each other, and the domestic scenes are adorable, especially Haruto's birthday and when they visit his family.

This is one of the better omegaverse manga I've read so far, though it does follow some common tropes with omegas painted as lusting after alphas and alphas being the stronger and more desirable secondary gender. Miyabi hates what he is, to the point that he's tried to hide it and doesn't even wear a collar at school and tries to suppress his heats continually, even though when Haruto first transfers to the school, he points out how all omegas wear collars and their heats are strictly regulated. Haruto is one of the rare ones that honestly cares about Miyabi, and while he clearly does have instincts and is attracted to him, refuses to act on anything until they're on the same page and it's what Miyabi truly wants. While it does have it's dark spots in the story, overall it's rather wholesome in the terms of both omegaverse stories and high school romances.

Taishin moves to Tokyo for university while also chasing after his senpai who helped him when his beloved pet passed away. Takara doesn't seem too impressed at first, though he continues to help Taishin as the kid seems more than a little naive and clueless overall, as well as a bit of a danger magnet. Doesn't seem to take long before these two are fairly inseparable though and admit they do like each other, even if there's still some serious uncertainty and insecurity floating around.

Yoshino seems like your typical salary worker, except he wears a wedding ring to ward off women and is definitely interested in other guys... except he's never had a relationship even though he's turning 30. Overhearing his coworkers talking about a gay bar in the area, he decides to change that, except it may have turned out to be more than he thought. There's a lot of confusion between Yoshino and Rou, especially as Rou seems to be the exact opposite - a college student 10 years younger, a bit flashy, and uninterested in attachments that knows he's playing the field. At least that's how it seems at the start until it seems like Rou has been watching Yoshino for awhile and was already interested in him before he turned up at the bar. Maybe dreams do come true, even if it seems a bit cliche and rushed with a heavy dose of misunderstanding to start off with.

We get some fluff for the summer break, including Akari agonizing over how to make Jirou see her as an actual wife or girlfriend after the practical exam rather than just as a partner for the exam to switch to the pairs they originally wanted. Of course it's just when she's set her sights on him for real that it looks like they might finally score high enough that they could make the switch. Jirou seems to admit that he's confused over the difference between like and love when it comes to his relationships with Akari and Shiori, too. Minami knows Akari is interested in Jirou at this point, but not that he's also who Shiori is after. Would Akari and Jirou still want to switch pairs after all of this?

Now that Akari knows Minami's feelings and decides to really go for Jirou, it seems Jirou and Shiori may have finally connected.... though Jirou keeps misunderstanding things there and still thinking Shiori is somehow using him to practice for Minami or some weird thing. Mei seems to remain supportive of Shiori as well, though she's still also clearly unhappy about her fixation on Jirou. The group may have a bit of a break with their summer jobs too, but once they're back at school, the practical exam will resume, putting Akari and Jirou back together while Shiori remains with Minami. What a mess all around.

Here Akari and Jirou thought they might be separated for part of the summer, but of course they're actually talking about the exact same job. So really not much will likely change if all the same players are going to be at this beach job rather than at school.

Well this is getting complicated. It seems even Mei might have a thing for Shiori, where she turns everyone else down, including several girls. Meanwhile Watanabe (who is now trying to get Jirou to call her by her first name, Akari) can't seem to make up her mind between Jirou and Minami who she was originally crushing on. She knows Jirou still likes Shiori though.... except it seems maybe he's also warming towards her. At the same time, Jirou and Shiori both like each other, yet are somehow convinced the other doesn't return their feelings while still hoping maybe things will change with this practical assessment, even though they're both paired with other people. There's no shortage of rumors and misunderstandings to go around with this weird living arrangement for the school practical assessment and everyone's mixed emotions and signals.

Jirou is a nerd with no experience with girls and a secret crush on his childhood best friend. For their school practicals, these two have to live together like a married couple and are scored by the school. Of course, the ones they'd rather be with are also paired together. It's a hot mess of cringe and come on moments as these two decide if they hate each other, are working together, or what they can tolerate while also pining for someone else.... and maybe falling for each other a bit at the same time without being aware of it.

This is a fun take on a find it game features cats. Some of the cats may blend in really well with their surroundings, and some of the levels are even timed, adding to the challenge. The downsides honestly are mostly the forced ads, as usual for many games, and the lack of saving options, so if you play on multiple devices, don't expect your progress to transfer.

Another good concept with a different idea on a puzzle game format. The downside lies in the advertising and lack of any save or sync functions so if your game freezes or you need to come back later, any process made is lost, including if you've watched ads or paid for any bonuses to progress in your game play. So essentially, it's free money for them and you lose out on any benefits if you've chosen either of those options. There is also a choice for a more standard puzzle play and a challenge competitive puzzle play. While it's an interesting concept, the overall settings and the usual push for freemium features will shorten it's play life.

I keep telling myself I'll stop playing this as the frequent ads both between levels and for any bonuses are highly aggravating, and yet I keep coming back to it when I want a simple puzzle that is easy to kill time with. Even if you run out of spaces or need a bonus and don't want to pay money or have enough tokens saved up, you can watch an ad to keep progressing on the game play. On the downside, it does mean you'll need an internet connection to play if you are prone to running out of options or aren't lucky in the color draw and need those bonuses without spending tokens. Eventually, this will probably fall by the wayside, but for now, it's a fun time filler when stuck in waiting rooms or something where you need to kill time but keep an ear out for something.

Another game that is not like the advertised game play, making it rather disappointing. It is similar to other games like Cryptogram Letters & Numbers. Sometimes you'll get a puzzle that has a hint at the top, but most of the time, you'll need to try to remember the waiting screen at the start for any theme indicator, which usually is about as clear as mud, and no clues other than the letters themselves unless you want to pay or watch ads for hints. Ultimately, this ends up being more tiring than fun and isn't worth the time overall.

Ultimately the frustration, false advertising, and advertising in game to try and entice purchases isn't worth the time to play.

The idea is actually great, but the actual game play on the app itself is horrible. To begin with, it is not like the ads would have you believe as all game play is forced battles between you and the computer for points to win the round. There are forced ads sporadically throughout the game play in addition to ads for any hints you wish to use. The downside is that any of these ads will either freeze the game, refuse to play, or not count after watching so you lose out on the bonus you were watching for to begin with. If the ads were limited to between rounds or for hints and actually earned you the item you were watching for, it would make more sense and be more manageable if you don't mind that type of game play. With it not being as advertised on top of the over abundance of forced ads in the game though and the frequent freezing or crashing, this one won't be staying around.

The series is still cute, but painfully slow going, and the main characters remain repressed in a lot of ways. They take two steps forward, just to take five steps back before trying to step forward again. It's a little strange Suiren reached out to Ato as well, let alone that he's actually sort of helping her, even if he is as blunt as ever in his approach. Both Ato and Kawasumi compare Suiren to Kawasumi's older brother though, so perhaps there's some link there in their mannerisms and how they tend to respond to her. It's good that Suiren is trying to reach out and learn, though it seems her goals may seem more challenging than most given her personality and at this point, ingrained reactions to the peer pressure around her. It's rather sweet to see her step up a bit to help Yuri where her friends are always trying to cheer her on.

His Majesty the Demon King's Housekeeper 8 by Saiko Wadori

Sakura is rather hilarious thinking that her "ailment" may be another mold. How that seems to trigger whatever this "laziness" is wearing down the demon king is another matter that no one seems to be connecting, though it's clear he does rest better when Sakura is nearby (rather literally). We get a rather large part of the demon king's childhood and training to become king in this installment, along with another strange dream of Sakura's that could be rather ominous. This mold doesn't seem to be letting up either, and no one seems to remember the crux of the curse that they're supposed to be looking for. If the crux could be found, would magic then be able to at least stave off the effects of the mold until a more permanent solution could be found in the event certain magics were to be sealed away again sometime in the future?

Delinquent Daddy & Tender Teacher 5 by Tama Mizuki

This series remains cute but also rather slow paced. Hinata may be more perceptive than the adults are giving his credit for, and this break idea they had could may have at least temporarily backfired a bit. It seems as if they reached the same or similar enough conclusions to start moving forward again, though. At some point, someone else at the school is going to find out though, especially if they want to really live together as a family like they both keep hinting. It will be interesting to see what, if anything, changes now with the rings too. Given how they came back together, it's hard to imagine either of them wanting to take off the rings or hide them, especially once they get used to wearing them.

While we don't see any of the kids, including Shizuka fully grow up, we do get to meet some new friends and see new interactions with the family. Hazuki is worried about being a good father, while the rest of the family is planning a surprise party for his birthday. Who would have guessed that the neighbors also happen to be a band Shizuka seems to adore. It's funny to see her act like a fangirling teen when she's usually so serious. Aoi, on the other hand, doesn't seem to lose his blank stare, no matter what the band does to try and entertain him. A few scares aside, it seems this family is as close as ever.

Well that was a fast turn around, going from hey let's think about a third to bringing a new baby home. Minato doesn't take very well at first to no longer being the baby of the family or the center of Mama's attention. Shizuka continues to be a huge help at home while learning to navigate her own changing world. She really does seem to take after Hazuki in some ways though, especially given how she confronts her classmates and then decides she's found her mate. It would probably be more shocking at this point if she didn't see that through, if the series goes that far, though her parents are certainly struggling to be supportive while also falling apart that she's growing up and cares about someone outside their immediate family now.

That could have been trouble with this new student fixating on Naoto and Hazuki being away on a business trip when Naoto's heat comes early. Of course it would be early as well given everything, and Naoto couldn't possibly be a bother to Hazuki even though he knows that's something he'd want to know. Fortunately, it seems the kid learned his lesson and everything worked out well. Guess we'll have to wait and see if they really are adding to their family again, which would certainly make Grandma Mizuki very happy given her frequent blatant suggestions to give her more grandchildren.

The Abandoned Empress 9

This may be the best part of the story so far with so many revelations and things coming together. Also glad to see this is not the last of the series so hopefully we will get to see at least some of the story progressing past these new vows and truths. It very well could have ended at this point, though it would be nice to see some happiness after all of this chaos. If it wasn't enough that Tia constantly seems to be a target, it seems Ruve is as well. Even Jieun turns out to not be entirely what was expected as we learn more about what happened to her before coming back in time, though it's doubtful she ever would have really believed Tia's claims that their paths have changed had she not been with Carsien when Tia was attacked. The only one we don't really seem to know about at this point is Allen, though he's rumored to have at least visited his family home a few times now, so he's still alive.

Raeliana is finally getting some answers, but is it all too late? It seems there is a lot of behind the scenes maneuvering, and very few are in the same loop. There are so many pieces and Beatrice is playing things just right that even Noah's brother seems to be stuck in the politics of everything. Heika showing up might turn things around, but that's only if they keep the rest of the nobles from coming together against them. Noah probably won't be too happy when or if he learns of all of these new memories and details Raeliana is remembering and figuring out now. It's not sounding too promising to save both of them though, even if that would clearly be Raeliana's preference. It's no wonder things haven't been working out so splendidly for Beatrice, between Raeliana herself changing her own story and Beatrice not actually being herself either.

Harold & the Purple Crayon

Harold & the Purple Crayon (2024)

This is a cute rendition of the popular children's book by the same title come to life. Harold isn't entirely sure why he was created, and sets off on an adventure to find the "old man", his creator. Along the way, he learns a lot of things about this world and the world of stories like where he comes from. Not everything is as it seems, but there's definitely an adventure waiting at any moment with a little imagination and a special purple crayon. Surprisingly, it was my son who really wanted to watch this and seemed to genuinely enjoy it. A good family friendly movie to add to the collection.

Of course, Hazuki's friend asking for help would end up being for someone the couple already knows, and Naoto is already just as invested given his excitement over meeting another male omega. The best parts though are around Shizuki. The kid really is more perceptive than the adults around her usually think, though she has her insecure or sensitive moments as well. It'll be interesting to see if she does eventually start call Hazuki Papa officially, but even if she doesn't, it's clear they're a pretty tight family at this point. Sort of surprising though, given the way they're constantly all over each other, that Minato is the only addition to the family count at this point in time.

The Concierge at Hokkyoku Department Store

The Concierge at Hokkyoku Department Store (2023)

The premise looked interesting with a human working in a special store where the customers are all animals, however, it ended up feeling like it was lacking something overall. The art style is a bit different in a way that at least for the humans I found distracting and rather disconcerting. The floor manager is also seriously strange vibes with the way he shows up everywhere (even in a cooking pot of soup) and seems to be thought of as rather harsh, but also seems oddly caring with this new probationary employee. If anything, he seems to be more of the very strange old man acting as a guiding figure. The one who is perhaps the harshest we see very rarely and not until about halfway through the movie is there any real interaction that can be followed. The ending is certainly sweet with how things seem to come full circle and the employees and customers pull together for various challenges, but there's just something in the style and storytelling that feels off and not as engaging as maybe it could be. Might just not be my best story fit.

The characters still have their moments, especially coming together as a family, but there's a lot of drama and a lot of negativity around Naoto being an omega from outside sources. Fortunately, it seems he has more support than he knew and is finding new friends and places that accept him and his family. It might be a little concerning how invested Hazuki's mom is in their relationship, but it's adorable the way Shizuku helps out and corrects Hazuki, especially when he asks about becoming her dad. This one took longer to read only because I honestly thought I had finished it for some reason and was distracted by other series only to realize when I came back to the series that I was missing the last chapter and the extras.

My Gently Raised Beast 8 by Yeoseulki

This is a rather fast-moving addition to the series. So much death followed by so many new memories and meetings. In some ways, it's rather convenient how a lot of it works out, but it also doesn't seem like the roller coaster is over just yet either. At least Amon and Briddy seem to be on a good path overall, as is the rest of their family. Even Adellai seems to have weathered the worst of the storm and seems at least a little more stable on the other side. There were some pretty hard revelations thrown around with all of the reincarnation and divine power references. At least if nothing else, Briddy seems to have broken the cycle Amon was so terrified about.

Snow White With the Red Hair

Snow White With the Red Hair (2015)

I kept hearing about this series but hadn't gotten around to watching or reading it yet. A few sleepless nights thanks to bad health and needing some easy entertainment solved that problem and sucked me right into the story so I had to keep watching. Shirayuki and Zen are obviously adorable and drawn to each other right from the start, even if it may take a while for either of them to admit to anything. The rest of their friends are equally adorable and have an interesting mix of being supporting characters, and in the boy's cases, coming across as maybe being interested in Shirayuki themselves (though none of them seem willing to act on it as they all fully support Zen). The only downside is we don't really see the end of the story in the anime, just the confirmation that they're on the same path and everyone seems happy with how things are playing out at least for the moment. It would seem we'll have to turn to the manga to find anything past season 2 and hope for the actual ending that everyone seems set on in the story.

Nina the Starry Bride

Only 3 episodes in so far, but I can see where there's potential with the complex family dynamics. Perhaps the similarities and attraction between Nina and Azure develop too quickly, but it may also need to be that way at least at the start to set the foundation for the rest of the story. The third episode introduces an interesting twist with Azure being more like Nina than anyone could have thought, only he stepped into his role much earlier in life, so it was possibly an easier transition given the innocence and learning of childhood on top of how one changes while growing where Nina is trying to step into a grown princess' role just before getting married. Though now have to wonder, just who might she end up with? This unknown prince we haven't met yet to avoid the chance of war, or Azure as these two seem to gravitate around each other?

CSI: Miami

CSI: Miami (2002)

My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars


We have a new cast and crew in this version of CSI with Horatio Caine leading the pack in a very different scene with a lot more of the same as CSI looks for the truth and digs through all the clues to solve their cases. As usual, they may ruffle a few feathers along the way, but they're always out for the truth. What is perhaps not unusual is some conflict with internal affairs eventually digging into things and making a mess, even though they're supposed to be discreet and silent - at least until they have any real proof of anything. Seems to be a great way to rub a lot of people the wrong way very qiuckly.

Well that ended up being rather anticlimactic. It seems most of them are convinced this lady is Kyouhei's mom, but he seems content with considering her as someone completely different and removed from him. It is rather curious the slight reaction we see to the references of Kyouhei looking like this lady and his name being similar to this other kid's. Seems like this is all a sidenote though as we move on to the cultural festival rather quickly. Of course Nanami manages to get herself roped into the worst position possible, so Andou and Kyouhei are out to save the day.... with as little effort as possible. Cultural festivals definitely aren't a thing at least for Kyouhei, though as usual, he's willing to cross a few of those boundaries if it means he's with Nanami.

A Sign of Affection 10 by Suu Morishita

Yuki is just as awkward and still adorable as always setting up her new home with Itsu. On the other hand, Itsu is somehow maybe a little too nonchalant at times, and maybe willfully oblivious when it comes to Oushi, even though he also clearly knows they both have strong feelings for Yuki. Of course, he's not willing to give her up still either. Oddly enough, it seems Oushi and Shin may have hit it off as friends, which may hold some hope as it seems Shin is willing to share a much different perspective with Oushi than he had before. The new curiosity seems to be Yuki and Itsu's new neighbor and this new person who's shown up that Itsu seems to know. It's curious how Itsu can be both overprotective and outgoing at the same time. All eyes are on Yuki now though, whether he likes it or not.
