This was one of my favorite books as a child, and now is in my kid's book collection. In many ways, the story is sad as the tree continues to give and give until it feels like it has nothing left.... except it turns out it does have something left. On the other hand, the boy takes and takes until one day he realized he doesn't need anything. But there is something he would like, that happens to coordinate with what the tree has left and would also appreciate as it finally provides the one thing she has wanted all along and been denied since those early days of play.... time and company. My daughter actually cries when we read this story. My son is still a little too young to really understand it all and the lessons it can teach.
