My Happy Marriage 9 by Akumi Agitogi

The narrative changes a lot here as we're no longer focused solely on Miyo and her experiences to find her happy ending. Miyo and Kiyoka are much more comfortable together, though it seems Kiyoka may not be as retired from his military career as he had hoped. Even Godou ends up joining the fray as his old classmate seems to be in the middle of this new commotion trying to draw Miyo away. Kiyoka gets a good scare in the process, though it seems Miyo is doing well as far as her own abilities go. She's doing much better around other people as well, proven by how the rest of the women in the extended family seem to adopt her so quickly. A far better response than what they receive from the men, who seem to need a rather severe wake up call given their actions and the unfolding story of their own history. For all that these new characters portray themselves as easy going and accepting, they don't seem to have any intention of truly honoring Miyo's choice.

The manga is currently the furthest behind in the story of all the mediums available, and yet there is something about seeing the story come to life with the art that is still thoroughly enjoyable and continues to add new dimensions to the story. Miyo meets her mother's family for the first time and learns about her own gift, but possibly at the cost of her new life she's slowly been settling into with Kiyoka. Miyo's own timid nature is at times her worst enemy, though she has quiet moments where she comes to her own realizations. Once she's made a decision, she seems to be steadfast in seeing it through. Of all the characters in the series, her growth is the most significant in all forms of this series, though she remains very demure.

My Happy Marriage 8 (Light Novel)
My Happy Marriage 8 by Akumi Agitogi

This volume is a bit of a surprise as it's a collection of short stories rather than a traditional light novel. That being said, each story is still enjoyable and the characters are still great, it's just a little harder to follow along and figure out where each story takes place as they aren't in a linear timeline. While we don't see much of Miyo outside of the more recent timeline, we get a fair bit of information regarding Kiyoka's childhood, and even Godou's. It's always been clear these two are friends given how Godou tends to be way more energetic than Kiyoka, yet he trusts and relies on him a lot more than most of his squad, beyond just being an aid. From the author's notes at the end, the main two stories were written specifically for this volume as an official part of the storyline while the rest are various short stories that have popped up in random locations over time while working on the series, so those are more like small extras. The piece about Kiyoka's parents was especially surprising, though we still got several touching moments between Kiyoka and Miyo.

My Happy Marriage 7 (Light Novel)

This curse business seems to have a heavier impact on Miyo than might be clearly visible, especially as she reverts to silence and fear, which also isn't helped by her lingering insecurities and inability to verbally express herself, even though she's been with Kiyoka a year and all other claims are that she's growing into her power and position and happy with him. It is rather astonishing that Kiyoka didn't see it to begin with, but his father picked up on it right away. If anything, Kiyoka seems to be struggling himself in his eagerness to be with Miyo and his remaining duty to the military. For awhile there, it really did seem like things were going to fall apart, though the author did promise this would be a happy installment, so of course we finally see the wedding. We even hear from several characters from Miyo's past in this story, though only a few of them were known from previous volumes, so we have some new characters as well. The windy and turbulent story in this volume even has some familiar faces stepping forward and asking if there's anything wrong between the couple or if Kiyoka has upset Miyo. Seems like a bit of regression here, though it's let go much faster than in the past. The story certainly isn't over yet though, so hopefully we'll see things pick back up again and move forward as they adjust to married life.

Kiyo is adorable and really, what did Kiyoka expect when Miyo is alone, presented with a child version of himself that she thinks is just serving his wishes and otherwise an object brought to life, and is barely holding on trying to use her own determination to find a way to save him from Usui? Really, it's adorable the way these two care for each other, and a great relief when Kiyo is able to remind Miyo she is not as alone as she feared. While Arata was still a bit of a wild card, it seems everyone else she knew in her circle was still firmly on their side and doing what they could to assist in the best possible outcome. It will be curious to see what a non-military Kiyoka is like and how Miyo continues to live with her Gifts now fully awakened, even if she doesn't intend to use them outside of training going forward.

My Happy Marriage 5 (Light Novel)

Usui has made his move and managed to split of Kiyoka and Miyo, though Miyo doesn't seem to be standing for it, especially not after Kiyoka's last confession before he was taken away. Rather disappointed in Arata at this point and it seems the few allies left are scattered, buried under what little work they can do to try and salvage things, or possibly also locked away at this point. With the emperor also working alongside Usui now and the way the laws are currently written, things are certainly looking rather bleak at the moment. It will be interesting to see what Miyo thinks she can accomplish going in person for this confrontation, especially knowing her powers are limited to the dream realm. If everyone else is correct though, and her power in dreams is truly so much stronger and above all of the other powers, curious that there hasn't been some attempt or focus in her training for her to potentially stop Usui and his fake Gift users rather than simply protecting her and keeping her away from everything, though she has always been more peaceful and non-combatant. We've seen a few instances where her own fire has flared up and she's been an unexpected force to reckon with, especially in the dream world like when she saved Kiyoka.

Miyo is faced with some questions about her own heritage while also confronting some not so comfortable ideas about Kiyoka's own past. Fortunately, it seems she is exactly who she thought she was all along (aside from the having a unique Gift that she didn't know about for most of her life). Kiyoka seems to either hit or miss when it comes to trying to read Miyo, though he's certainly become much more openly affectionate if nothing else since recognizing his own feelings. Miyo seems to come to the same conclusion herself briefly, but also seems to talk herself out of it and insist she doesn't really know her own feelings or how to identify them. Poor girl is going to wear herself into the ground again. The ending for this installment is both happy, if not peaceful, and yet also ominous at the same time. Usui does not seem to be all that sane, even if he is very powerful and seems to be two steps ahead most of the time.

Wow, Kiyoka's parents are interesting to say the least. Kiyoka seems to be making a lot of headway coming to terms with his own emotions and situations now, though Miyo is still perhaps too innocent to completely shake her confusion, so she's still a few steps behind. Even still, they make a great pair, and Miyo is making significant strides in her own growth. There's another bomb dropped at the end here.... can't help but wonder if Miyo really is a Saimori at all....

Miyo and Kiyoka aren't having an easy time of things, and yet they seem to grow closer than ever. Miyo is slowly learning what being part of a family really means. In the process, they find more of her family with some answers finally on her Usaba heritage. Not sure what to think of the emperor at this point, but at least the prince seems kind. Even though there may be some bumps along the road, and more than a few misunderstandings, it good to see they aren't giving up on each other and have so much support to stay together.

Though this may be the last form of the series that I am starting, believe the light novels came first as the current 3 volumes of the manga and 6 episodes in the new anime lead up to about where this first installment ends. We gain Miyo's backstory and introduction to the Kudo family and cement that the two both want the relationship to continue. Seems outside forces sadly may not entirely agree given the kidnapping attempt and the focus on Miyo's Usaba blood. If the other versions are any indication, this is going to play a role in this version of the story as well.

Things look a bit dark at the beginning as Kaya has worked with Koji's father to kidnap Miyo and try to force their will on her once more. For once, Miyo isn't bending. Between this and Koji stepping and up and going to Kiyoka so he now has proof of exactly who has taken Miyo, the rest of the families don't really stand a chance. While this is great for the main pair and they finally appear to get some happiness, it seems not everything will be smooth sailing. What is the Gift use that Kiyoka keeps sensing while Miyo suffers her nightmares, and what about this new premonition from the prince? At least everyone remaining seems happy for the pair, but it seems something else will be coming for them in the next volume.

Miyo has had a hard life, and that makes it even harder for her to accept that maybe things might be looking up. It doesn't help that Kiyoka has a bit of a reputation, so of course she assumes she'll be sent away the same as all of those who came before her. Neither of these characters seem to be who everyone assumes they are. Even Kiyoka himself seems to be surprised at his responses and reactions to Miyo and has a hard time reading her, which is frustrating him since his job relies on being able to read people and he is considered one of the strongest Gift users currently. Yurie is an absolute gem, and definitely seems to be helpful smoothing the way for this odd pair.
