I Cannot Reach You 2 by Mika
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
This remains a very slow burn series at the moment, though Kakeru is starting to acknowledge some possibilities and his own feelings, while also arguing with himself that it isn't possible and he's making things up. Meanwhile, Yamato is sure of his own feelings and afraid of what may change in the future. The side story at the end is rushed, but also very sweet and if anything, highlights the boy's relationship and strong feelings. Now if they could just both work out what they want and actually learn to talk to each other.

Yamato and Kakeru are nearly polar opposite, one being attractive, organized, and an excellent student while the other is considered very average, tends to be a bit chaotic, and frequently needs supplemental classes. What most don't realize, is that the two are childhood best friends. Kakeru isn't just dense when it comes to his school work though. Even with several hints and signs, he doesn't have a clue when Yamato is trying to open up to him either, which isn't helped by some of the others now planning mixers and talking about girlfriends all the time. It's a set up for a very slow burn, but also cute to watch the fumbling with mixed messages and odd encouragement. Hopefully no one gets too hurt along the way.

Miku's dreams seem to have finally come true, but it's not so easy for a workaholic to adjust to downtime and being able to do as she pleases. It seems Kamishiro may be set on taking care of her for a change, though unsure we'll see more beyond this set up of new more domestic life. As with volume 2, there's a side story at the end of this with new characters and themes that doesn't seem to connect to the main story at all. Totsuka and Kosaka are another pair of unusual suspects it seems, but Kosaka unexpectedly seems to help Totsuka, even if he may handle things badly at the start.

Miku is trying so hard, but she may be clinging to the wrong thing to try and get her way through it as she continues to hope for a future with Kamishiro even when they are no longer working together and she acknowledges she "belongs" to someone else as a mistress. Rather an unusual situation to end up in. How is it that every time she ends up needing to be taken home, no one else is there either? Rather convenient that she's always alone at just the right time.

Ibuki still seems troublesome, but maybe not as much as originally feared once he actually met Yuuki and heard from Iori himself about their relationship. Hopefully everything else pans out okay and he doesn't disappear again. It's sweet to see how Iori still keeps Yuuki as his first priority, even hearing h is brother is back when he's been looking for him for so long. Yuuki is as endearing as every, so earnest and always doing her best, but very sweet in her relationships. The series is ongoing, so unsure where it will end, but it still has a lot of potential and overall is a very positive story.

Iori and Yuuki are really sweet, and Seno turns out to be a really good guy. No one is wrong when they point out how incredible it is that he genuinely wants Yuuki to be happy and stays her friend in line with that position and support. Iori's brother seems like he would be a good guy from the way Iori talks about him, but suspicions being confirmed as to who he is and what he was asking for don't add up. If anything, he comes across as a bit creepy and questionable, which is disappointing. Hopefully that will also be cleared up as things unfold. Just what is going to happen on this trip though with how Yuuki is so shy one minute and so bold the next?

More hints of things between Yuuki and Iori, though Yuuki seems to be struggling with what to do and how to read Iori. Iori really doesn't seem like he'd have an interest in playing around at this point, and definitely shows more than a few protective tendencies when it comes to Yuuki. Maybe trying to keep things too innocent, but also fed up with it? Have to pick up the next volume to see where the latest cliffhanger leads to.

We don't see much of Yuuki's friend other than short appearances after the first part of the story either, with the rest of the book mostly interacting with guys - a very big change of pace for someone who was a wallflower and doesn't seem to really have any experience with an actual relationship so far.

Something about Nano isn't adding up as is difficult to figure out. On the other hand, Uka continues to learn and grow as she figures out what she wants and who she is, facing many of her fears. Fortunately even if they are no longer in the same class, she's learned enough to stand when she needs to and still has the support of her friends and boyfriend when it counts the most. Even her father seems to have relaxed so she can spread her wings more freely.

Not the ending expected, but a rather kind way to wrap things up and turn a tense situation into a new world that is looking up. It's surprising who is in the dungeon with Rue, though it doesn't seem that anyone else understands his presence or what it means. Robbie's actions are especially surprising, but there are more than a few small answers sprinkled through the quick interactions to bring this series to a close. Seems death is not the same in this world either as this seems to be the trigger for switching between worlds, no matter who the character is, though no one in their world of magic seems to expect it outside of summoning. Not the usual connection expected, but puts a positive twist on everything.

It's awhile between volume releases, but this series continues to be enjoyable. We see the attack at the school and Hana finally outing her real powers in this volume, along with a good deal of information about the talismans and the rekindling connection between Hana and her twin Hazuki. Saku has no doubt when it comes to Hana's abilities, but is still struggling as far as any romance in their relationship is concerned, and he might be losing ground there with Hana quickly gaining more friends and allies along the way. The story remains familiar, especially if you've read the light novels, but it's still fun to see the characters come to life with the artwork.

This is an interesting addition to the story though it is slightly difficult to follow with the frequently changing point of views, even as those changes in view add additional insights and color to the story as a whole. While there isn't necessarily a lot of progress as far as the character's relationships, we do get to see how the formal engagement process all goes and meet some new character's in Julie's homeland. Poor Em might lose his mind at this rate though between how enamored he is of Ally and all of these other obstacles coming out of the woodwork.

Ally is a bit of a different isekai character where she not only remembers her previous life, but has no idea that her new world is part of a game even though she is aware she at least is reincarnated. She willingly takes on another person's life to save them before they can no longer be reincarnated after learning of their story and looping consistently leading to heartbreak. If anything, Ally is strong both physically and emotionally long before she also becomes magically strong as well. It's fascinating how everything plays out and the similarities and differences that unravel along the way. All in all though, it seems things turn out for the best, with those who are true friends sticking together and thinking nothing of the reincarnation ranting that takes place later other than seeming to feel bad for their own past deeds regardless of not remembering as Ally does. Not so surprising though, the "villainess" may not be who everyone thinks it is, just as with many others of these reincarnation series.

The characters are still entertaining, but we learn more about Charlotte and Cecily's town even though Cecily and Zeke remain the focus. The childhood memory is just enough foreshadowing without entirely spelling things out to see what is coming when it happens. Rather frustrating all in all, but the ending is still sweet, so it's an okay addition to the story. If there's another volume, curious if Cecily and Zeke will continue to be a focus or if we may see more of Charlotte and Alphonse given the hints that keep being dropped and how Charlotte has slowly been coming out of her shell and able to work through some of her fears about "loins."

This covers the same story as volumes 1 & 2 of the manga, just with a little more detail, as is fairly normal for light novels that have been adapted into manga form. With the storyline similarities, curious to see what the second volume covers as the initial story ties up nicely at this point already. We have several short stories at the end of this volume that add additional details and laughter as well. Cecily's mother is an interesting addition to the mix, as well as the expanded knowledge regarding the knights that seem the closest to Zeke. Princess Charlotte's reactions to "the loins" seems to be improving as well, except for perhaps one specific "loin" that she has a rather dramatic reaction too. You get used to her odd references as the story goes on, but it doesn't make some of her declarations any less hilarious with the language she chooses to use at times.

This is a rather twisted omegaverse story. While the base universe is standard for this type of tale with betas, alphas, and omegas of both the male and female variety, the main two characters are twisted in unique ways. We have the omega pretending to be an alpha to elevate his social standing and the alpha pretending to be an omega to lure out omegas and punish them rather harshly. Of course the two would end up in a rather strange if not somewhat unwilling relationship that neither one truly recognizes or will name at this stage. Neither one is a great character individually, so putting them together and with this type of universe is forced and challenging.

Nigel looks like he may be lonely or worried, or maybe even both. Perhaps answering that question is where the next volume will pick up with their talk as the cliffhanger. Elaine's antics are amusing, but perhaps she needs to slow down just a little to enjoy her new life and the people around her.

Cecily is in a bit of a predicament after falling for Zeke, captain of the fifth princess' knights. It's hilarious and a bit surprisingly that she would craft such an odd potion and then be convinced that all actions are a result only of that unintended drink that she had determined not to give Zeke after starting to get to know him. Either her changes made it stronger than expected, or there's something else at work here. The scene with Snow is just hilarious, and it's good to see that others in the palace also don't hate witches. Prince Julius seems equal parts relieved to have Amelia around for Prince Sarge and also concerned as it becomes clear just how well matched these two may be when it comes to their research. Hopefully things will continue to improve and this newest obstacle won't cause too much damage to their plans.

Curious if we'll learn how or why the princess went from acting so kind to apparently hating Jeanne and determined to take everything from her. Jeanne seems to have gone from a life being feared as a child, to being somewhat accepted and praised in her role summoning and helping the hero, and back to being feared once their battle was won. "Mew" was far from what she expected when she found she was able to cast magic again, but it also seems the two may be growing on each other. Unsure where the story will go from here, but there are at least a few more volumes, so we'll see what we learn of this odd duo.

Doesn't hurt that she has so many around her that genuinely care for her and are coming to understand her quirkiness, so they can and will step in to help as needed. Even this fourth prince seems to learn some unexpected lessons in his observations and short experience with Abby and her newfound family. The overall story is just as endearing as Abby herself is, but it's also disjointed and awkward, making it difficult to follow at times.

There isn't really a definite end to this series, but it does end on a high note. Eli's fears may not be entirely conquered, but she's slowly learning and realizing what everyone means when they insist she's fine just the way she is. As usual, Eli and Chris are sickeningly sweet with each other, while Eli continues to have the most hilarious gut reactions when they are interrupted. All of the rumors and scheming that is known at this point seems to be resolved. Truthfully the only thing that would make the ending better would be if we actually saw the wedding itself after all of this drama. Even then, the ending that is used is sweet and brings the main cast together very charmingly while highlighting a few more of their wins.

The queen is difficult to read as well, and things seem to keep stacking up perfectly to play to Eli's fears and weaknesses. When she does take a stand though, even without even being aware of it, it's clear she's in a league of her own. Now if only she could recognize that confidence and apply it to other situations.

This series never disappoints when a new volume comes out, no matter which format it is or if the story is already familiar. There are little details in each version that add to the overall picture, and of course the art is amazing. Arnold's expressions are very subtle, so it's not surprising that he seems more put out when he realizes Rishe is learning how to read him at least some of the time even as he tries to puzzle her out in return. Millia is even more childish than expected, even knowing she's supposed to be a child at this point in time and determining that it's at some point before Rishe met them in her previous life. It's also interesting to see the contrasting images of Leo and Rishe's current life compared to her memories of her previous life as she pieces together who he is and tries to puzzle out the differences in this life. Of course, as with other volumes, there's also a new short story at the end that is adorable. For all that they may both hide their feelings much of the time, these two really do make a good match.

Oh goodness, Chris sure does get his feathers ruffled easily, especially when it comes to Eli, though it's also sweet while being hilarious at the same time. One by one, Eli manages to unravel the mysteries they come upon so everything makes sense and seems to work out in favor of all.... or all except for the culprits of whatever trouble they were rooting out to begin with. Now we have this new misunderstanding that is just as hilarious while Eli is completely clueless at the start as usual.

Eventually, perhaps, her acceptance of her own feelings if not Prince Christopher's given the way he continues to surprise her and shower her with affection. The childhood memories are also adorable and continue to fill in gaps in the story leading up to their engagement and why the prince is going to such lengths to secure their future together. Fortunately for him, it seems Eli holds him just as dear, even if she's not always very confidant when it comes to what she feels she deserves.

Prince Christopher seems to have a very good memory when it comes to Elianna, though Eli herself has a horrible memory, especially when it comes to people and her childhood it seems. We learn a lot about why the prince has gone to such great lengths to keep Eli at his side and see his rather awkward attempt at their first date outside the palace (thought it seems like they more just ran into each other to spend time in the palace rather than ever actually having a date previously). Eli is all too pleased with their destination, but events at the market couldn't be expected in the least, not helped so much by Eli's rather rampant imagination and skepticism. While the storyline still feels familiar since watching the anime, the details are also vague enough that I can't recall exactly how this plays out or why the Roma dislike Eli's family name so strongly.

Once again, Elaine can't really hide who she truly is, though she's determined to try and leave that title behind her. Nigel is very easy going and supportive, though it's hard to believe it would really be that easy to just pick up and take off at a moments notice, especially as the crown prince. The birthday scene is very sweet and definitely moves things along on the relationship front, not that Elaine seems to be having any better luck accepting that as she does of shaking her saint title while in hiding. Conveniently, there's a certain jewelry piece that is missing in later panels in the volume, which seems odd unless it's set aside after the initial gifting.

Douglas is another interesting character joining the ranks, and it seems like everyone other than those in her homeland (with the exception of the captain) adore her. We have a literal match maker on the scene now, though we don't get anything specific from either character's point of view outside of Elaine's modesty and humble opinion trying to refute why she should deserve anything. Seems perhaps her previous lifestyle may have done a number on her own self confidence, though fortunately not her kindness. It is also very lucky that Nigel seems to trust her completely, or Douglas would be out of luck as well.

Douglas is another interesting character joining the ranks, and it seems like everyone other than those in her homeland (with the exception of the captain) adore her. Everyone seems to truly appreciate Elaine, and some even keep calling her saint now while thinking she's a healer, though Nigel and the king at least know the truth, not that we actually see Nigel inform him. Her powers do come in interesting, though curious if the new barrier will make it easier for the dragon to find her, even if they can't go through her barrier. Ralph is interesting as well, even as he seems to be somewhat baffled by Elaine's behavior, as he seems to appreciate having someone to talk to. Prince Claude however, still seems naive and dim-witted. What is it with the initial princes in these stories that they're so awful? At least Nigel genuinely seems like a kind person.

This is an interesting twist with the title, and in some ways reminds me of Spy x Family with the marriage of convenience with a spy and an assassin, except this couple is aware of their alternate lives and at least in Omi's case, is determined to keep their relationship and life. For such a "cold" assassin, he seems rather enamored with Neneko, who is drawn to him, concerned about him, and also trying to stay loyal at the same time - not an easy feat at the moment. Omi does have some points though when he takes care of her and proves his word. It will be interesting to see how this relationship evolves, if it continues to.

This is very different as far as isekai series go as there seems to be no reason Rin ends up in this other world, though it did seem to give her an affinity for different languages in this new world, even if she has no other magic. Of course she'd end up in a rather complicated relationship with the vice-captain even while both of them seem to have reasons to actively avoid relationships while also clearly being drawn to each other - something surprisingly the reluctant vice-captain seems more able or willing to admit to himself than Rin is. The author notes at the end also hints that there is a novel series that this is based off of. It'll be awhile still before the next manga volume comes out, but this relationship and setting is just different enough to be intriguing, so plan to pick it up and see how things go.

This goes back to a similar format as book 14 where it alternates back and forth from the past to the present, except the past doesn't normally go back as far as their childhood but is closer in-line to the rest of the series with the post-war events, though they span several hundreds of years very quickly leading up to current events with the focus once again on Illium and Aodhan. Their interactions are joyful and it's good to see how everyone bands together, but it's also heartbreaking how they are forced to separate and go their own ways because of their powers and instincts that apparently can't be changed. Limited time aside, that doesn't stop Illium from planning to turn the Cadre on its ear and do whatever he can to make changes so he isn't forced into politics and more separation from his family than is truly necessary. Truthfully, this is all expected given Illium's personality and the near ascension during the war along with other observations throughout the series, but that doesn't make it any easier to see or help with the feeling that it's all rushed given the forces beyond them when it comes archangelic power and the perceptions of the Cadre.

Vertias still seems lonely, or at least more aware of it, but also seems to now be good friends with Blanche and at least useful to Sabrian. Sabrian seems very confused and desperate at the moment, which probably is not helped with Raven's antics. Abigail herself is also struggling, both with her newfound abilities and her emotions as she seems to both hope and try not to hope at the same time for a better future. It seems in the midst of this she's aware of her own emotions while also trying not to admit them as she thinks it would be hopeless. Veritas is trying to help, but he may have unintentionally made things worse the way Sabrian tends to take things given the way he's acting now. The end of the book hints at something positive coming in the next volume, though it'll be awhile before it comes out to see how things are going. We do get a new character as well, and this new mage seems to adore Blanche. Add to that the tea party with Karen and things remain rather interesting and confused all over the place with all of these characters.

Melissa is still strong here, but also a tad annoying with her arrogance confronting Melody Peacock and inserting herself with the other love interests, though Yuri still seems to adore her. Likewise, Nine also appears to be devoted to her as well, and says as much as soon as he is able to, though it doesn't seem like Melissa truly understands Nine's feelings or devotion. Her maid, on the other hand, seems to read between the lines rather well, not that she's helping unless perhaps someone offered her a monetary reward for her aid. The market is an interesting scene, but perhaps tipped a bit too much in Melissa's favor given her memories of her original life. In all, the story seems to be more about Melissa figuring out how this world translates from the book she read and why things are different with her new perspective than about really moving the story along.

We finally get Itsu's backstory and the meaning behind his tattoo. Of course, Yuki wouldn't be herself if she wasn't highly empathetic and emotional. She's still easily embarrassed, but also clearly supportive and attached to Itsu. Things might be picking up with Oushi as well given his conversation with his friends and the note this volume ends on. Of course it's another cliff hanger where you know something is coming, but will have to wait for the next volume to find out just how this meeting is going to go. Yuki and Itsu still will need to work on navigating their new life together and still going to school, let alone how things will change once Itsu graduates. It'll be interesting to see what Itsu has in mind, given he's stated rather plainly he doesn't see them separating, but he also acknowledges that Yuki didn't sign up for his dream or what it might mean with all the constant traveling.
